State Gov. Jennifer Granholm today ordered U.S. flags throughout the state and on Michigan waters be lowered for on Monday in honor of the late U.S. Navy Petty Officer 3rd Class Ben Castiglione, a 2006 Howell High School graduate who died on Sept. 3 while serving in Afghanistan.

HM3 B Castiglione

Flags should be returned to full-staff on Tuesday, state officials said.

Castiglione, 21, died in Helmand province, Afghanistan, while on active duty supporting Operation Enduring Freedom as the result of the detonation of an improvised explosive device.

When flown at half-staff or half-mast, the American flag should be hoisted first to the peak for an instant and then lowered to the half-staff or half-mast position. The flag should again be raised to the peak before it is lowered for the day.

It makes me quite sad to read about Navy Corpsman being KIA again. My war was Vietnam in the 60's. I lost too many fellow 8404's and Marines in that war.
