A 2006 Howell High School graduate was killed on Thursday while serving in Afghanistan.

U.S. Navy Petty Officer 3rd Class Ben Castiglione was killed by an improvised explosive device, the man’s family reported Friday morning.

The family was notified Thursday, but didn’t have further details. Castiglione served the military as a medic.

The Press & Argus ran a neighbors story about Castiglione on February 6, 2009.

Navy hospitalman is modest military hero

By Christopher Nagy
DAILY PRESS & ARGUS

Ben Castiglione said he doesn’t feel like he did anything especially heroic.

The U.S. Navy, however, begs to differ.

The 2006 Howell High School graduate and current hospitalman with the Navy was awarded the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal last fall for superior performance of duties during Operation Iraqi Freedom. In particular, U.S Marine Corps Col. R.E. Smith, Castiglione’s commanding officer, cited two specific incidents in the commendation — one in which Castiglione treated two Iraqi civilians who sustained broken bones and lacerations following an automobile accident near the Rio Lobo combat outpost, and another where Castiglione made a quick assessment and gave treatment to an unconscious Marine suffering heart palpitations and troubled breathing due to a scorpion sting.

“Hospitalman Castiglione expertly and efficiently treated numerous Marines, Iraqi security forces and civilians in basic health care and advanced trauma. … Hospitalman Castiglione’s initiative, perseverance and total dedication to duty reflected credit on him and were in keeping with the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and United States Naval Service,” Smith wrote in the certificate that accompanied the medal.

Ben Castiglione, on the other hand, addresses his recent recognition with a healthy dose of modesty.

“I definitely do not feel like any type of hero,” he recently wrote in an e-mail from Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune in North Carolina. “Many Marines and corpsman did great things on our deployment, and — this sounds cliché — but I was just doing my job.”

The Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal is awarded to members of the military below the rank of lieutenant commander, Ben Castiglione explained. It is given for meritorious service or achievement that exceeds what is normally required or expected based upon an individual’s rank, training or experience.

“I’m very proud of him,” said father Joel Castiglione of Cohoctah Township. “He’s done so well with this. He’s really excelled in all of his classes and training.”

Joel Castiglione was able to see the medal for himself when Ben Castiglione came back to Livingston County over the holidays, and he described his son as a “gung-ho, John Wayne type of guy” when it comes to his military service — a point with which the hospitalman’s stepmother agreed.

“He’s really into it,” said Gloria Castiglione. “We’re very proud of him, and very proud of everyone else who is over there, too.”

Ben Castiglione joined the Navy as a Marine fleet force corpsman on Halloween 2006.

“I always had an interest in medicine and wanted an opportunity to operate with the Marine Corps on deployments,” he explained. “I’m able to learn medicine while also being able to operate within the Marine Corps. I have seen what the Navy has done for people in my family. I have an uncle who started off as a corpsman and now is a doctor.”

Ben Castiglione’s rank is hospitalman, and his job is corpsman, which are to the Navy what a medic is to the Army. Because the Marine Corps is a component of the U.S. Department of the Navy, Marines “pull their medical personnel from the Navy to treat wounded Marines in the field, work in battle aid stations and for every echelon of care that is required for the Marines to be able to operate effectively,” he said.

“He was always interested in medicine,” Joel Castiglione said. “He just decided he wanted to serve his country, and he didn’t understand why the same people had to keep going back (overseas) again and again. He wanted to take his turn.”

It’s a decision that Ben Castiglione said he doesn’t regret.

“The military life is not easy, but I believe that I am a stronger person for it,” he said. “The hardships I have dealt with was worth what I have learned and the bonds I have with the Marines in my platoon. When my platoon and I have downtime and talk and mess around with each other, it’s like one big hilarious, dysfunctional family — and it’s a blast. We take care of each other.”

Ben Castiglione came back late last year from Iraq, his first deployment since joining the military. A Navy corpsman assigned to a Marine Corps division generally sees two deployments before being transferred to another command to share learned services and experiences to a more clinical level outside of field service, he explained.

“I believe that being deployed overseas, people think that service members would have a better idea of what is going on within this conflict than someone who has never seen that part of the world,” Ben Castiglione said. “Honestly, you don’t have time to make opinions of the war or why you are there. You are more concerned about making it back with your friends and getting the job done.”

As for interacting with the civilians in Iraq, Ben Castiglione said most seem happy to see U.S. forces.

“Especially when they were hurt in some way and we’re there to help,” he said. “As a corpsman, I am required to treat the locals just as I would my Marines, so I had great opportunities to interact with the people there. Most of the people who where not happy to see us were foreign fighters from surrounding countries.”

When it comes to the troops, Ben Castiglione said many are tired; however, he said servicemembers are always ready to act when called upon, and the withdrawal from Iraq and the refocus on conflict in Afghanistan has rejuvenated many in the military.

“A lot of people in the military, I believe, are ready for Afghanistan,” he said.

For now, Ben Castiglione hopes to only continue his time as a corpsman; however, his life’s plan will likely take him out of the military and allow him to use his knowledge and experience in the civilian world.

“If an opportunity presents itself for me to advance my medical knowledge while being able to be with the Marines, I’ll take it,” he said. “My long-term goal is to eventually get out of the military and take what I have experienced and learned, and become a physician’s assistant.”

Joel, you and your family are in our prayers. I just can't fathom the pain you must feel at the loss of a son. He must have made you very proud with his accomplishments. May the Lord be with you during this time and please know our prayers are with you.

Ben was easilly one of the funniest people I knew! I only wish I could go back and know what I know now. I think everyone wishes that sometimes. It's hard to believe he's gone and never coming back. It feels like just yesterday me stacey adam and ben were all sitting at my apartment relaxing having fun. I keep thinking I'll wake up and it'll all be gone. Like it never happened. You neverthink something like this will happen to someone you know no matter how many people you have fighting overseas. I always thought it was just something that happened on t.v. I never imagined it would happen so close to me. It makes me pray harder for the other loved ones I have deployed and even the ones I don't know because they are someones family and friend too. Rest In Peace Ben, we'll see you on the other side!!!

I still remember Ben coming into work, happy, excited, and eager to halp Marines and fellow sailors. Always happy, always ready to work, always ready to help somebody. He IS the epitomy of a Friend, Brother, confidant, and an extraordinary Corpsman. One memory i will share is... he would come to work, and joke around with HM3 Moore, and HN Knight, When he joked with Moore : he would go around the BAS and tell everyone.. "when you see Moore, tell him to SHUT up!" everyone he talked to, wouldn't wait to hear Moore say a word, but they would say "SHUT UP MOORE!"
Stiggy had a wonderful way of making Knight feel at home, he would speak in a Jamaican voice, and say that Knight had ARMS LIKE T-REX!!!! BOOOOY!!!! I Love you man. you will have my heart forever, and my family will honor you forever! Semper Fortis / Fidelis.

    Doc's Fam,

I'm so sorry, and understand that i'm forever in your debt. If there is anything you need, please call me @ 910-381-8326.

    Forever Yours,

Carrie, Joel and the Petre and Castiglione families,

Finding the right words to share with your family at this time of incredible loss is a challenge.

Your family has been so warm, in years past, and I only hope that together you find the love and support needed to persist through this difficult time. I send my most heartfelt sympathy as you heal from this unimaginable hurt.

Thinking back to my fond memories of Ben….little Ben was a joy. He looked forward to weekend trips Up North when he would ever so energetically help his Uncle Joe do whatever mundane task he needed to accomplish that day at the lake home. All he needed in return was a trip out on the lake to go fishing. It has been years since I’ve been in touch so I was thrilled to hear of his accomplishments while in the Navy. It doesn’t surprise me to hear that he chose a path of such selflessness. It’s a great credit to his character and personality to have contributed to our nation’s military and made such a sacrifice. He will be missed.

My sincere respect for Ben and I send my strength to all his loved ones.

    To Stiggys Family,
Stiggy and i went to corps school together. He was truely great guy. A group of us hung out a lot in corps school and there was never a dull moment! He was so funny and upbeat. Being in the military you meet a lot of people and make so many friends and you learn to say 'see you later'. Stiggy was one of the people who you hope meet back up with in your career. I found out today from one of my closest friends from corps school. I am deeply sorry to hear about your loss. So many of us have such great memories of him, He was such a great friend, and he will never be forgotten. RIP Benjamin Castiglione. See ya soon Stiggy! God Bless to his family and friends!

To all Doc Ben's friends and family:

I feel greatly for your loss. I never knew Ben, but it sounds like he was a lot like a lot of young men that I knew during my service years.

You are not alone. We would welcome you all in the Howell area to come down to the American Legion post to meet on a regular basis, just to talk a little if you like, or to just listen. Sometimes that helps.

We are talking about starting regular meetings of friends who would like to talk, once per week. Late Sunday afternoons has been suggested, or an evening during the week. If you are interested in taking part, please let me know, and I'll see what we can set up.

Write me at legion@post141howellmi.org if you are interested in attending, and send me your phone number, and I'll give you a call and give meeting time details.

Please feel free to write, I look forward to hearing from you.

    Sincerely,

Bless you Ben for what you have given up for our freedom. Our thoughts and prayers are with your family, friends and comrades over this loss of such a patriot. I will be there tomorrow to stand the flag line for this wonderful young man who gave so much.

It must be quite an honor and a great feeling to have so many people talk about what a great Person, Friend and Hero Ben was to so many people. When I read all of these comments and all of them tell the same story, it tells me that Ben had to have had wonderful parents to grow into such a GREAT PERSON. Everyone in the United States owes Ben and his family for his service and dedication. Guys like Ben are the reason you and your Sons and Daughters are safe at home. I should know because I have one of each at home enjoying the FREEDOM that comes from service men and women. God Bless all of them and their families. My Family hurts inside for your Family's loss.

Dear Carrie, Joel, Gloria & Jordan -

We are so sorry and heartbroken that Ben is gone. Our memories of him are very happy and fun. We moved next door to Ben when he was 8 and I watched him play with my two young boys. He'd push them in the swing and their toy car and catch frogs for them. Ben helped them on the rope swing and swam in the pool with them. Ben was always very attentive and playful and my kids are struggling with the loss of their "first" friend. I told them that they now know what a TRUE HERO is.

We thank Ben for his service and sacrifice. It is an honor to have known such a good man and we will never forget you.

    May God bless you all.

We knew Ben through my brother and sister-in-law, who were his Uncle James and Aunt Lynne Morris. We remember Ben as an energetic and friendly youth who had a fond appreciation for the outdoors. Out hearts go out to the Castiglione and Petre families for their immeasurable loss. There is nothing worse than the loss of a loved one. However, Ben's memory will live on with each and every one he touched.

My name is Sarah McConnell. Ben and I were dating throughout our high school career and onto his first 2 years of the Navy, .After the 1st deployment to Iraq, two days later I flew down to North Carolina to see him. I will never forget it... we walked along the ocean Talked of marriage, future, and life. It was the best time we ever had together. Connected on a totally different level. He ended it shortly after because it was unfair to me for him to be gone all the time even though I still thought of him every day and missed him very much.

Not sure how to handle this, and still in very much shock.. just dealing with the pain.
...I Will always love you Ben.

    Dear Carrie,
My name is Jackie Reed and my son is a US Marine and was very good friends with Ben. I would love to talk to you when you are ready. I have a great picture of Ben, Ray and Brady the night before they left for Afghanistan. We live in Roswell, Georgia so Ben came home with Brady on two different weekends and we quickly fell in love with your wonderful son. Needless to say, I am heartbroken over the news of your loss. If you or Ben's dad could let me know how to get in touch with you, I would love to send the picture to you. My son called from Afghanistan on Sunday morning and asked that we somehow find you and talk to you. My family send our love and prayers to you and your family.

Ben was my first friend. I met him when I was one. We were next door neighbors. He used to come over all the time to play and came to my birthday parties. He went swimming with me in his pool and swung on his rope swing in his back yard. Ben was a lot of fun to play with and I will miss him. Hunter K.

    Carrie,

Please accept my deepest condolences on Ben's death. Once again, our family at work is devastated by the loss of one of our own. Your pride was shared when everyday we viewed Ben's photo on the picture board. Ben became a hero when he enlisted, not when he was killed. I and my family owe Ben and your family a debt that can never be repaid. I thank Ben for my freedom. Please do not hesitate to contact me if there is anything that you need. You will remain in my prayers during this most difficult time and through the days that lie ahead. My friends who are also Gold Star parents are also available to you as only they understand what you are going through now and what you will be going through. May God Bless and comfort you. 810.227.0178

I don't know what so say really. I have so many wonderful memories of Ben, it makes me sick to hear this. I talked to him not long ago, before he returned to Afghanistan. He had disappeared after graduation due to his joining the Navy, and I was happy to finally get back in touch. I grew up with Ben and knew him since we were 5. He was one of the funniest guys I've ever met in my life, and he had a heart of gold.

When we were kids he rode my bus and had a crush on a certain someone. She jokingly told him she would go out with him if he got her flowers. So he picked her flowers and put them in his backpack to give to her at school. Some kids noticed and made fun of him for it...so he threw them away and he never gave them to her. What a lucky girl she was.

I will miss him so much. I was proud to see the man he had become since leaving High School. I know he was proud of himself too, and I'm glad I was fortunate enough to have him as a friend. His funny personality remains unmatched. He was a hero, not just in Afghanistan, but to me. Losing him breaks my heart.

    To Ben's family:
I am a widow of an Army medic who was also Killed in Action, July 8, 2008 by an IED in Iraq. From reading the article about your son he sounds a lot like my husband CPL Bill McMillan. He too also wanted to attend nursing or PA school after the Army.
I know there are no words that will ease your pain. I hope you know that you are not alone, your military family will always be here for you and those that have lost as well. Any way I can help you please don't hesitate. If you have questions, ask them. I know at this time I had many and I can try to answer them. If I can do anything for you right now please let me know. You are part of the military family and like any family I am, along with so many others, here for you and your family during this devastating time.

My name is Adam Tuck and I served with Benny in Iraq on his last tour. He was my corpman in 3rd plt. I just wanted to say that he was an outstanding corpman and set the bar for all corpman everywhere. He loved helping people and he did a dang good job taking care of 30 grown men. He was always upbeat and had a joke to keep us all going. To Bens parents, you should be very proud for raising such a wonderful son. He will be missed by many. Take care and rest in peace brother.

I knew Ben since he was about 9 yrs old as his mother Carrie has worked tirelessly along me for over 14 yrs. The best tribute to Ben is the fact that I told my wife that I hope my children grow up with at least a portion of his sense of duty, service and character. Ben would have been a great Physician Assistant (PA) and even a better Doctor since he had the basics of what it takes to be in this business. He was very hard working, motivated, curious and compassionate. Something the health care industry is lacking.

He died serving others which is the most noble way to die just like some of greatest heroes. He helped stamp out tyranny and bring freedom to people he did not even know, which takes true bravery.

He will be missed, but never, never forgotten.

This is such a dirty and most cowardly conflict we have found ourselves fighting against. As a retired corpsman having done two tours in Nam I suffer this much more when a brother is taken from us in action. I hurt when I see these young men at our VA hospitals without limbs. It hurts.
Such a different war these brave Corpsmen are exposed to with our bravest Marines. I am 61 years young and would be delighted to have taken Ben's place if I physically could. I would have died for him if I knew he would have made it back home. God be with his blessed family and friends at home. Each of these young men are heros and I have the highest respect for each one fighting for our freedom. It would be so wonderful if all Americans understood what these brave young men are exposed to. Perhaps it would be even a Godsend if all our government officials could walk a year in Ben's Boots!
Doc Castiglione, some day I will have the honor to shake your hand, sir. You gave the ultimate. God Bless You and your family who will always, always look up to you.

My thoughts and prayers go out to the family and loved ones of HM3 Castiglione, RIP friend. As the former corpsman for HM3 Castiglione's platoon it was hard to leave my marines, but I knew them to be in exceptional hands. He was an awesome corpsman and above all the he was an awesome person. It was an honor to know you. You will be missed. God speed Delta Company!

George Patton once said it is an injustice “to mourn the men who died. Rather, we should thank God that such men lived.”
I thank God for you Ben. Men are alive becasue of what you did.

Even though I didn't know HM3 Castiglione, I want to express my deepest sympathy to his family. My husband and I are both former Corpsman and my son is now an FMF Corpsman at Camp Pendleton. Words cannot express how sorry we are. Every time I hear about losing a fellow Corpsman, I cry. I have cried for every one of them. May God help to ease the pain the family is enduring at this time.

HM2 Schatte, now Sgt Schatte 68wM6 in the Army.
My thoughts and prayers are with Devil Doc Castiglione family. Rest assured he is in Heaven with the rest of our brothers and sisters.

I am a retired (2006) HMC and whenever I read about one of our young "Docs" making the ultimate sacrifice, I pause and try to not shed a tear because I know from personally walking the walk as HM3 Castiglione did he was doing what Corpsman do... So I salute them with a rousing BRAVO ZULU!!!

Benjamin you will be missed but know that your reputation lives on "Doc" and that those that are left behind are in a better way after having known and served with you.

I have been out of the Navy since 1978, but my heart still grieves for the loss of a fellow Hospital Corpsman. While I did not stay in medicine, the Hospital Corps and the Navy formed my early life, and we are "givers", helpers and life savers. God will help the family of this young man and his service and sacrifice are deeply appreciated.

I would like to offer my condolences to HM3 Castiglione's loved ones and friends. Upon reading the statements that he gave and essentially just a piece of his life, I know without a doubt that he was an honorable and courageous man with a kind heart who wished to do anything to help those in medical need. Once again, my condolences. It saddens me that a brave young man who did so much had to pass away.
