FORT CAMPBELL, Ky. — The U.S. military says a Fort Campbell soldier has died in Afghanistan after his unit came under fire from insurgents.

Fort Campbell reports that 25-year-old Spc. Shannon Chihuahua of Thomasville, Ga., died Friday after suffering massive trauma in the incident in the Wataphur District, Konar province. The Defense Department says the unit was attacked by insurgents with small-arms fire and rocket-propelled grenades.

The post says Chihuahua was a combat medic assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 1st Battalion, 327th Infantry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division. He joined the Army in July 2008 and arrived at Fort Campbell in July 2009.

Survivors include his wife, Kristen Chihuahua, and daughters, Sophia Chihuahua and Annabelle Chihuahua, of Thomasville Ga.; mother, Dennice Dinkins of Thomasville, Ga.; and father, Sebastian Chihuahua of Del Rio, Texas

A positive person, an incredible father — these are the words Kristen Chihuahua used to describe her husband, ArmySpc. Shannon Chihuahua Monday.

Chihuahua of Thomasville, Ga., was serving as a medic with the 1st Battalion, 327th Infantry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) in Kunar province, Afghanistan when he died Nov. 12 of “wounds suffered when insurgents attacked his unit using small arms fire and rocket propelled grenades” according to the Department of Defense report.

Kristen said he was attending to a wounded soldier.

An Army carry team transferred Chihuahua’s remains to Dover Air Force Base, Del., Nov. 14.

Services have not yet been planned as the family is waiting for his body to be released by the military.

“I just miss how positive he was and how much that he would tell me he loved me 100 times or more each day,” Kristen Chihuahua said. “I’m just glad to have been the woman to have been there to support him.”

The couple met in July 2006 and celebrated their fourth anniversary Nov. 4.

He had two daughters, Sophia, 2, and Annabelle, 4 months, and was an incredible father, Kristen said.

He was deployed May 2010 and she last saw him June 22, two weeks after Annabelle was born.

“He was full of energy and always wanted to make people smile,” she said.
Chihuahua was the fourth of five children.

“I’m his youngest sister and we graduated together,” said Jessica Frausto, who graduated from Thomas County Central High School in 2004 the same year as Chihuahua.

They also sung together in the chorus along with his brother, Eric.

I met Shannon in 2006 when I started working at Applebee’s. He was a great guy to be around. He was always making us laugh and smiling. Kristen started working there and they hit it off. I could tell how much they loved each other. It breaks my heart to have lost another friend to the war. I know that his wife and children will never have to doubt the love he had for them.

Shannon was my bunk mate at AIT in Fort Sam Houston. I am beyond heart broken to hear this. He was the nicest and funniest person I knew in the Army. A hell of a father and husband to.

My thoughts and prayers are with with the family, especially his wife and daughters in in his ultimate sacrifice. John 15:13 says Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends. My Nephew Andrew R. Looney payed his price on June 21, 2010, and he served in the 2nd Battalion, 327th Infantry Regiment, 1st Brigade, 101st Airbourne Division, and I can just see Shannon might have been there trying to save Andrew, after a suicide bomber killed herself at a traffic check point. I am so thankful for their service and sacrifice. May our nation never forget these brave hero’s for the freedom we have.n

He was my friend. He never went out during AIT except to see his family. He was always saving money and playing Lego Batman. Always saving and talking about his family. I remember once, I used to go out all the time to Big Bob’s Burgers, and I asked if he wanted something, he said sure not believing I’d remember. I came back with a double cheese burger with cheddar and Swiss. He was so surprised…but what surprised me was how fast a kid that skinny could pound a burger. We were friends from then on.
