Hi everyone I’m new to the boards and the U.S. Navy as well. I signed my contract last month and so far I’m having a blast getting back in shape and ready for RTC next June. One of my goals in life was to work with the United Nations and become someone high up, practicing law with a specialization on the international law field. With the economy not doing so well, I was one of the unfortunate people to have a house foreclosed and my family filing for bankruptcy. Being 20 and no money to go to college, the US Navy seemed like a dream choice for me.

Pentagon Won’t Ban Tobacco Use in Military – Political Hotsheet – CBS News

The Pentagon said today that it will not ban the use of tobacco in the military, the Associated Press reports. The announcement comes after a study commissioned by the Pentagon and the Department of Veteran Affairs recommended terminating the use and sale of tobacco products on military property. The study also recommended the military ensure enlistees are smoke-free.

Afghanistan: 2 killed in U.S. fighter jet crash in Afghanistan – Los Angeles Times

Reporting from Kabul, Afghanistan — An American fighter jet crashed Saturday in eastern Afghanistan, killing the two-man crew, U.S. military officials said. The crash of the F-15E came in a month that has already proved the deadliest for Western troops in the course of the nearly 8-year-old Afghanistan conflict. At least 50 coalition service members, including 26 Americans, have been killed so far in July. The highest previous monthly tally for Western troop fatalities in Afghanistan was 46.

Fight looms on military, VA health care taxes – Army News, news from Iraq, – Army Times

A handful of lawmakers are gearing up for a fight to largely exempt military and veterans benefits from the broader health care reform movement. Two issues are involved. One has to do with whether military and veterans benefits could be taxed in the same fashion as employer-provided health benefits, a proposal included in the 1,018-page health care bill being taken up by the House Education and Labor Committee. A second question involves potential federally imposed limits on the types and cost of care covered by health insurance, limits that could apply to both direct care from military hospitals and clinics and from the Tricare health plan, as well as to direct care from the veterans health care system. Republican aides, speaking on the condition of anonymity, said they expect amendments will be offered to protect the military and veterans health plans. Exactly who will offer the amendments and what those amendments might say has not been determined.

Iraqis: Suspect held in attack on U.S. soldiers – Army News, news from Iraq, – Army Times

BAGHDAD — Iraqi authorities have arrested a member of an Iranian-backed militia suspected in an attack that killed three U.S. soldiers in southern Iraq, police said Saturday. Meanwhile to the west of Baghdad, a bomb killed three people, including the son of a tribal leader. Maj. Gen. Adil Daham, chief of the Basra provincial police, said the militiaman confessed early Saturday to the attack on a U.S. base near the airport. The soldiers were killed Thursday night in a rocket attack, the U.S. military said, in a rare assault on troops in the comparatively quiet south. During a search of the house where the suspect and an aide were arrested, Iraqi officials say they seized four Iranian-made rockets and documents listing names of officials to be targeted. U.S. military commanders believe some Shiite militias have received funds and training from Iran, which denies the charge.

CHICAGO — The Pentagon’s chief said Thursday he could send more U.S. troops to Afghanistan this year than he’d initially expected and is considering increasing the number of soldiers in the Army. Both issues reflect demands on increasingly stressed American forces tasked with fighting two wars. Defense Secretary Robert Gates’ comments came during a short visit to Fort Drum in upstate New York — an Army post that that he said has deployed more soldiers to battle zones over the last 20 years than any other unit. Two Fort Drum brigades are headed to Iraq in coming months, and a third is currently in Afghanistan. Asked about Afghanistan by one soldier, Gates said, “I think there will not be a significant increase in troop levels in Afghanistan beyond the 68,000, at least probably through the end of the year. Maybe some increase, but not a lot.”

WASHINGTON — Suicides reported among soldiers have tapered off from extreme highs of early this year amid intense Army efforts to stem the deaths, but officials are not yet ready to say they have turned a corner on the problem. Army leadership said Thursday they hope a newly launched mental health study will help identify what is causing the self-inflicted deaths and what programs are best for preventing them. Separately Thursday, other researchers reported that 37 percent of Iraq and Afghanistan veterans seeking care at Veterans Affairs clinics for the first time are being diagnosed with mental health disorders.

Families headed to Okinawa must live on base – MarineCorpsTimes.com

SAN DIEGO — Forget about getting that off-base Japanese rental for a real local experience if you’re headed to Okinawa on an accompanied tour. Beginning Aug. 1, any accompanied service member headed across the Pacific on permanent change-of-station orders must live in on-base government housing, a move designed to fill vacant military homes, according to the Air Force’s 18th Wing at Kadena Air Base. The Air Force manages more than 8,300 family housing units on Okinawa for all four services. The policy, announced July 7, does not affect service members already stationed on Okinawa, officials said in a response provided by Maj. Kenneth L. Hoffman, a U.S. Pacific Air Forces spokesman at Hickam Air Force Base, Hawaii. Single service members still can live off base, if eligible.

Rep. expresses grave concern over EMALS – Navy News, news from Iraq – Navy Times

One of the more quixotic programs inside the Navy is the effort to develop an electro-magnetic launch system, a new way to launch aircraft from carriers without resorting to tried-and-true but large and maintenance-intensive steam catapults. The next carrier to be built by the Navy, the Gerald R. Ford, will use the new system, but no aircraft have yet been thrown into the air by EMALS — an event not scheduled to take place until next year, although construction of the new ship already has begun. If the system doesn’t work, in the words of at least one critic, the Navy may be building “the world’s largest helicopter carrier.”

After the Inspector General for the Department of Veterans Affairs issued a report Wednesday stating that a university had violated a contract for research on Gulf War Illness — and that VA had wrongfully awarded the contract in the first place — a lawmaker called for canceling it entirely. “I ask that you look into this matter immediately and implement the Inspector General’s recommendation to terminate the contract for default so VA’s funds can be directed to research projects that will help those veterans affected by Gulf War Illness,” wrote Sen. Daniel Akaka, D-Hawaii, in a letter to VA Secretary Eric Shinseki dated Thursday. The contract confusion has wasted more than two years and millions of dollars that could have been used to help veterans, according to the report.

World’s oldest man, WWI vet, dies at 113 – Navy News, news from Iraq – Navy Times

LONDON — The world’s oldest man, 113-year-old World War I veteran Henry Allingham, died Saturday after spending his final years reminding Britain about the 9 million soldiers killed during the conflict. Allingham was the last surviving original member of the Royal Air Force, which was formed in 1918. He made it a personal crusade to talk about a conflict that wiped out much of a generation. Though nearly blind, he would take the outstretched hands of visitors in both of his, gaze into the eyes of children, veterans and journalists and deliver a message he wanted them all to remember.

NEW YORK — Walter Cronkite, the premier TV anchorman who reported with reassuring authority on events ranging from the assassination of John F. Kennedy to the moon landing and came to be called “the most trusted man in America,” died Friday. He was 92. Cronkite’s longtime chief of staff, Marlene Adler, said Cronkite died at 7:42 p.m. at his Manhattan home surrounded by family. She said the cause of death was cerebrovascular disease.

Getting your next assignment just got easier. On Thursday, sailors began applying online for their next job, bypassing their career counselor. Previously, sailors had the option of viewing available jobs online, but career counselors still had to submit the applications. But assignments won’t be automatic. It’s still up to detailers at Navy Personnel Command to approve the moves. “This gives individual sailors more control, but doesn’t make the career counselor obsolete,” said Senior Chief Navy Counselor (SW) Veronica Holliday, Navy Region Southwest command career counselor. “We are still a part of the process, but our job now is to help sailors prepare for picking assignments and help them navigate any problems they encounter.”

FORT SAM HOUSTON, Texas — The U.S. Army Medical Department’s recently published “68W Advanced Field Craft: Combat Medic Skills,” was named a “Hot Product” at the 27th Annual EMS Today Conference and Exposition, hosted by the Journal of Emergency Medical Services. The text placed in the top 30 of tens of thousands of EMS products submitted according to Alisha Weisman, Jones and Bartlett Publishers, textbook publisher. “Hot Products” are granted distinction and selected for being innovative, functional, potentially life-saving, and offering remarkable improvements to patient care and provider performance she said. “This book ultimately contributes to saving lives on the battlefield. The authors worked in the field and understand the imperatives that exist in insecure situations,” said editor-in-chief Casey Bond. “Their dedication is visibly manifest in (an approximately) 92 percent save rate in current conflicts.”

Medics turn aid station into Afghan emergency room

KONAR PROVINCE, Afghanistan — Outside Forward Operating Base Blessing here, combat medics serving with 1st Battalion, 26th Infantry Regiment, spend every morning combing through a crowd of sick or injured Afghans desperate for medical attention. “This is their [emergency room],” Spc. Danielle Lafoille of Manistique, Mich., said. “If something happens, this is where they are going to come.” Since arriving at Blessing in July, the 1st Infantry Division soldiers have treated more than 4,000 Afghans, some walking as long as two days for treatment.

All active-duty, most Reserve components meet recruiting goals

7/10/2009 – WASHINGTON (AFNS) — All active-duty military components met or exceeded their recruiting goals in June, with the Marine Corps adding the highest percentage of its target to its ranks, Defense Department officials here announced July 10. Military Reserve components, with the exception of the Army National Guard, also met or exceeded their goals. Data published on the DOD Web site shows that the Marine Corps goal was to add 3,655 new Marines, which it exceeded by 14 percent, recruiting a total of 4,155. The Marine Corps Reserve more than doubled its goal of 565, adding more than 1,200 Marines. The Army National Guard fell short of its mark, recruiting 84 percent of its goal to add 3,209 Soldiers. The Army National Guard has reduced its accession mission as part of its end-strength management program, officials said, and is on track to achieve its year-end goal.

Remains of 7 troops killed in Afghanistan return home

7/9/2009 – DOVER AIR FORCE BASE, Del. (AFNS) — The remains of seven American troops killed July 6 during combat operations in Afghanistan returned to their nation during a dignified transfer July 8 here. Twenty-six family members from every region of the country stood on the tarmac witnessing their loved one’s return. Subdued voices of the carry team leaders directed their teams to perform precise movements as they transferred their comrades-in-arms from the C-17 Globemaster III to a waiting vehicle. A six-person Navy team carried the transfer case of the single Sailor into one vehicle, followed by a six-person Army team who then carried each transfer case for the six Soldiers into a second vehicle.

7/10/2009 – WASHINGTON (AFNS) — The rock group Def Leppard and Raven Drum Foundation have started giving away 100 free concert tickets to military members and veterans with military ID for each show in the 2009 Def Leppard summer concert tour to honor the military and provide a little fun and excitement over the summer months. Poison and Cheap Trick also will perform on the entire tour. “Def Leppard’s involvement came through a desire to give something back, and what better way to honor these heroes than with a night of music?” said Rick Allen, Def Leppard’s drummer and Raven Drum Foundation founder. “We wanted to thank these heroes in a meaningful way for their service.”

Tomb of Unknowns to be repaired, not replaced – Navy News, news from Iraq – Navy Times

The Army Corps of Engineers and Arlington National Cemetery have decided to repair the Tomb of the Unknowns rather than build a replacement, Sen. Jim Webb announced Friday. Webb, D-Va., and Sen. Daniel Akaka, D-Hawaii, said they “applauded the decision” to repair visible cracks and other wear and tear on the white marble sarcophagus, according to a press release from Webb’s office. Unknown war dead from the nation’s 20th century wars are interred or honored in the Tomb, which also honors all U.S. troops who do not return from battle.

A former Marine and friend of Lt. Gen. John A. Lejeune’s family has a message for local media around the North Carolina base that bears the legendary Marine’s name: If you’re going to report on it, say it right. Patrick Brent, a former infantryman with 2nd Battalion, 24th Marines, is hosting a “professional military education class” Friday on the proper pronunciation of Lejeune’s name. The base is commonly referred to as “Leh-june” rather than “Luh-jern,” the French-Creole pronunciation preferred by the Baton Rouge, La., native.

There’s stupid. Then there’s Air Force stupid. At least that’s what hundreds of airmen told us when Air Force Times threw out the question: What are the dumbest rules in the Air Force? We’d like to take credit for the question, but it really goes to Army Maj. Gen. Michael Oates, who asked his soldiers in the 10th Mountain Division what griped them about the way the Army lays down the law. Oates got nearly 100 responses to his blog post; we counted more than 350 posts to our callout and received nearly 20 letters through the mail. We passed on some of the gripes to service leaders to get their take. The response: Cut us some slack, we’re working on it.

More than 500 Minn. guardsmen ready for Iraq – Army News, news from Iraq, – Army Times

ST. CLOUD, Minn. — More than 500 members of the Minnesota National Guard have finished their training at Fort Hood in Texas and are preparing to ship out to Kuwait and Iraq. Lt. Col. Scott St. Sauver spoke with reporters Friday and described the plans for the 550 soldiers deploying with the 1st Battalion, 151st Field Artillery. They will be headquartered in Kuwait, but run missions in Iraq. The average age of the soldiers is 28. St. Sauver said the battalion will be in the desert next month for their yearlong deployment providing convoy security, bringing supplies to bases and helping to remove equipment from Iraq as part of the reduction in U.S. forces there.

HYDE PARK, Vt. — For Pfc. Andrew Parker, it was a bittersweet homecoming: He was hailed as a hero, feted with a star-spangled parade and showered with gifts at a welcome home ceremony. He had to watch it all from a wheelchair. Parker, a 21-year-old Army cavalry scout, was paralyzed in November when a roadside bomb blew up the vehicle he was driving on patrol in Afghanistan. On Saturday, after months of rehabilitation in Veterans Administration hospitals and a community fundraising effort that added wheelchair-accessible accommodations to his parents’ house, the wounded warrior came home.

Free retreat offered for TBI vets, families – Army News, news from Iraq, – Army Times

The deadline is July 27 for troops with moderate to severe traumatic brain injury, and their families, to register for a free getaway near Big Bear Lake in California’s San Bernardino Mountains. The Survive & Thrive Veterans and Families Project, launched by Casa Colina Centers for Rehabilitation, will hold its first session Sept. 17 to 20. Additional sessions for other families will be held in the spring and fall of 2010. The retreat is designed to help troops adjust to home life and community life in a relaxing environment. The number of slots at the camp was not immediately available.

25,000 to compete for master sgt. promotions – Army News, news from Iraq, – Army Times

About 25,000 sergeants first class will be considered for promotion by the annual Regular Army and Active Guard and Reserve master sergeant boards that convene Oct. 14 in Indianapolis and St. Louis. Competition for master sergeant stripes is always keen, and this year it’s expected to be the same. Select rates last year were 15.8 percent for the active-component board, which recommended 3,241 soldiers, and only 4.6 percent for the Army Reserve board, which selected 159 soldiers.

Firefox 3.5 was released today and is much “Safer, Faster, and easier to use” then IE or the other web programs out there.

One of the newest things they have incorporated, you no longer have to get a plug-in to play video, the browser handles the overhead and the calls for video.
