Any of you guys (or gals of course) been to OEMS? Does anyone know if it's possible to get a billet as a reservist?

As a SelRes HM, you can attend on the mil's dime or your own. With a $2,450 tuition, you obviously want to try to get the mil to pay. I know NavRes & MFR have each funded seats with adequate justification. I also know a couple people who paid tuition themselves and the Navy picked up the tab for IDTT orders & travel. (If you can't get full funding, you should at least be able to request a max $500 CME tuition reimbursement.)
We are trying to work OEMS in as "required training" for all our Doc's. Priority has gone to the Corpsmen slated to mobilize with the unit Det heading to Iraq first. We have already sent a half-dozen over the past 18 months and we have two more scheduled for Oct, but we are continually rotating through Iraq.
We didn't start incorporating this training until last year so I have not yet attended OEMS myself, but everyone I have spoken to has nothing but praise for the training and highly recommends it for anyone heading to the sandbox with the Grunts. OEMS also offers an "Operator" course now for non-medical personnel, but so far we have been unsuccessful in getting our Marines funding & orders. (rules & justification are verydifferent than ours)

The opportunity is there if you create it.

Thanks chief. I hope you don't mind, I reposted your response over at thesquadbay.com in response to a question from a Marine.
OEMS was/is an outstanding non-military run program. I have had the oppertunity to go through it last spring with 7 other SAR guys that went over to Kuwait to start up the Air Ambulance program. We had civilians as well as all the special force medics throughout the different branches in the class. BUMED picked up the ticket on that one for us.
Think of all the ' s**t situations you could be in, with a trauma patient and we go through each of them, practicing it all on either each other or on a sedated live pig. The best medical program Ive ever been too, the knowledge of Dr Haagard is amazing, he has done so much in that field (labeled the lunitic fringe of emergency medicine) and everything is backed up with facts, references and solid data.
They were in talks of an adv OEMS course, which would be mainly night labs in the field. I will be 1st in line for that course.

Sorry to be so dumb, but could you fill me in on OEMS? What is it, where is it, how long does it last, and what qualifications are needed to get there? Thanks in advance for info. Sgt. O.B.

Ok,
After googling,
O=Office
E=Emergency
M=Medical
S=Services
So.. My guess is trauma training out in town provided by Civ agency's.. I know when I was stationed in NOLA, I went through EMT school at Charity Hosptial. (Before it was under water..). Good Trauma training there, during the 90's we were not at war so this was the only way we could get valuable training like that.
Da-Chief out..

Thanks,
For the life of me I could not remember, I knew what it was etc.. My HMC(SEL) same as me.. we new about the course etc, but forgot what the acronym was for. I totally agree it is a "GREAT" course, if you can get someone to pick up the tab.
I was lucky to get alot of my "COMBAT" training in New Orleans while working for Charity Hospital for my EMT certs..

Nothing like combat in the bayou..

Based on conversations this month, it appears the rules have changed and funding is no longer being authorized. If anyone knows a way to make it happen, I'd be glad to hear it before I have to cancel October seats for two of my guys...

HMC,
Give me a day to find out, I know someone who just went through it in the Pendleton area. Not sure who funded it but he is here on leave before depoying to the sandbox.
I will call him today.
DFC
BUMED will fund it if it is benificial to the person and the community. When the 8401's picked up the slots for the new Air Ambulance program, BUMED has funded all 8401's that are heading out there for it. POC would be HMCS Thomas Spradlin, our modal manager, out at HC-3 at NASNI.

I went through the class in 2006 at Camp Pendleton. It was funded TAD for me. By far the best hands on training I've ever had.....
