I was just thinking, what about a thread discussing some stuff in boot camp? I know it's not quote Corpsman related, but it does deal with quite a bit of a Corpsman's first time being a Corpsman. Maybe some of the docs around here can give a leg up for those who are going in. Some things to prepare for, to know, or just expect. Some things in basic I'm sure give people the added training for certain NECs. There a broad array of topics that could be covered because where we all are Corpsman, we have all had different experiences and come aross many different opportunities. Thanks for listening Da-Chief/Crazy Cajun.

they don't have service week anymore. its easy as long as you do what you are told.
Talking to my son, who is currently awaiting FMF school, I think they've made things a little too easy at boot camp, and people are trying to make up for it afterwards. Generally not a good idea. Reports of too little military bearing, too little physical endurance, too little discipline. I can't remember anytime I was called to muster that people wandered around aimlessly until someone started to holler. We mustered in formation, dressed, and ready to be called to attention.

thats the funniest thing i heard all day!!!
yo cheif... love the pic... i remember that day (how can i forget)... i remember one sorry dude, he was so out of it he went out on the grinder in his skivvys... homeboy got drilled hard.:)
sometimes i still hear it in my nightmares.... get down, get up, get down, get up... starting positions... get up, get a hair cut, get down.:)
gotta love it!!!
I sure boot camp has changed since 1974. Especially since where I went no longer exists. Yep Orlando. Home of Micky, o.j. and dog races. Don't even think about A school. Boot camp has nothing to do with it. To me it was culture shock. No doors on the crapper stalls. The two ears advice is good. The mouth use it with discretion. I liked service week . I was at the field house. Making coffee for the staff and getting a lot of pool time. In the middle of august it was great. Much better than the chow hall.

Boot camp is a lot of fun if you go in with the right attitude. HM3_JD hit the nail on the head. Attention to detail is extremely important and is being stressed more than ever. It's definetly not as salty as it used to be. In the berthings there are posters everywhere that say "The use of profanity is not quality leadership." Haha... My instructors disregarded that within the first couple minutes.

i remember one of the first things i heard when i got off the bus and entered nrtc... some dude with a red bandalier said "who here thinks they know how to march?"... some motivated people raised their hands... "you people, march these brooms around."
... ha ha ha... welcome to the navy shipmate.
on a more serious note... some points made above are excellent ones... attention to detail and keep your mouth shut. dont bring uneccessary attention to yourself and dont eye ball company commanders. iron your skivvys and make sure your shower shoes stay clean... and keep the head squared away. they want to see team work and your ability to follow orders... just sit back and do what your told and the next thing you know your off to A school.
i think joining the navy and becoming a corpsman was one of the best decisions i ever made, next to going to college!!!

There was no direct relationship between boot camp and being an HM. The boot camp phase stresses team work. That is the single underlying theme of Boot Camp.
A corpsman has to work with others or alone, nothing prepares you for being an HM better than FMSS as far as I'm concerned. The lessons I learned there (leadership, prompt order following etc) remained with me from then on at eights yrs in as a newly frocked HM2, to the end of my 20 yrs as a wisened , salty, crusty, HM1 (AW).
I look back and I can say that i tried to pass on some nuggets ofwisdom to the younger group coming along. If they were smart, they listened.
