I've been looking into the ST feild for a while now and was wondering if any STs here would mind speaking with me over some questions. How would working with the Marines go? Would I have to take an FMF and then the ST school or just the ST? I have plenty more to shoot but I'm going to wait for a response, so I'll keep them in the holster, lol. If theres anything I don't ask and you think it's a pretty gleaming piece of info, toss it my way if you wouldn't mind. Thanks.

Depending on where you are in your career: You could attend either FMSS or ST first. However, in order to be assigned to the FMF, you have to attend FMSS, regardless of specialty, time served or rank.

i was flagged from boot camp to be 8404 back in 1994... after corps school i went to feild med... stayed at nhcp for about 2yrs... went to 8483 c school in san diego and when i graduated got a first class ticket to 3rd med btn. was in oki for a year... did a rotation in the OR... did some field work... oki was kind of like a vacation.... as a tech i was kind of put with all the intruments.... after leaving oki i got orders for 1st med btn.... did my time and got out... made $26 and hour scrubbing.

all in all i am glad i did it... now i am almost done with college and am going to be a wildlife biologist... i guess all that time i spent indoors and all the blood and guts got to me... now i enjoy being in nature.

i would recommend that anyone get a c school... your much more marketable when you get out... if you decide to go that route.

good luck shipmate!!!

have a fine navy day!:)

if your looking for experience in the OR get orders to a hospital... if your gung ho then go with the marines... i actually loved it. i got ost of my surgical experience when i got out... as a tech with the marines your pretty low key. when my work was done in the intrument room i had time to go to the gym and eat a good lunch... life with med battalion is skate... at least when i was in. maybe things have changed.

When exactly is too late to get into a C school immediately after A school?

if your right out of A school you might want to get some experience... thats the good thing about being quadzero... before i went to c school i worked at 52 area school of infintry... i was blue side but did a lot of sick call and field work with the marines... not to mention lots of humps. but i rotated all over the clinic, got my emt and evo license. that helped me be a better doc.... after my first duty station i applied for c school... you gotta remember that you are in uncle sams hands and its on an as needed basis... if they have too many techs you might not get the school. RT, PT, and CV tech is also good... so is advanced xray school... its all up to you and what you want to get out of your navy experience. if surgery is what you want then it never hurts to apply... but from what i remember they want you to finish your first duty station... apply for school early, talk to your career counceler... they key is to plan ahead or you will end up where the the navy needs you most... maybe iraq?

same could happen if you get a C school... i kind of wish i was able to get some combat medicine experience (shock truama/meatball surgery)... i missed the gulf war, and got out before sept 11. wasnt bad cuz after i got out i was working at a level 3 truama OR.

you only get out what you put in... ask lots of questions and be assertive. press your uniform and keep your shoes shined.... show them you have pride in your uniform!!! study your requirments... be involved and you will go far my friend!!!

Do you mean after A school, if I were to take up a C school I'd have to enlist longer than my 5YO? I thought that IN my 5YO I could pick one up.

if i remember correctly... they want 3yrs after you graduate from C school no matter how long you have been in before that.

after you graduate, and if your up for sea duty, get ready to deploy. thats what happened to me. if your lucky you'll get on a surgical team.

i am sure things have changed... med btn might be very active right now. i spent about 6yrs in, saw lots of green but i was never stationed on a ship.
