I check into my new home, NAS Jax Hosp, this friday.

I know from NHCS that I need to be in my dress whites with a full sea bag, along with my Med, Den, and Serv Records.

But what else am I going to need? Im going to be living on base and dont know what else I need.

A little help please. thanks.

Really, what you have with you will suffice. The Hospital should have a sponsor meet you at the airport, show you around base, etc. If they don't you should bring it up to your chain of command when you report.

SPONSOR? Yeah Right - That didn't happen for my corpsman when he went to Lejeune - just him and the rest of the new corpsman coming in splittin a cab to base - talk about flying by the seat of your pants - you got fresh people coming in who have NO CLUE what they are expected to do when they get there.

When I was in (back in the day)(HA HA - I'm really not THAT old) you had a sponsor who met you at the airport and helped you in-process and learn your way around. Mine wasn't that great but I made friends fast in the dorms and they helped me out LOTS ;)

You'll LOVE this - he finished FMTB and went to his new unit - a Marine assigns him his new barracks room - NO KEY for the room - the roommate has the only key - no one knows why there isn't another key but there isn't and the one the roommate has is stamped "DO NOT DUPLICATE" so it isn't like they can run off base to the nearest hardware store and get another one cut. He is basically gonna be stuck in his room for the LONG JULY 4th WEEKEND or leave the room unlocked (NOT ALLOWED) or only leave when the roommate is there and HOPE he is still there when he gets back. WHAT A CROCK OF **** - he says well we are dealing with the Marines here - good thing he has a sense of humor - I would have been beating on doors until they either came up with a key or moved me to a room that they had a key for. SHEESH :swn:

Show up in your dress whites with your records, and your luggage - someone there will get you set up in your barracks and such - you'll be fine :)
Good Luck at your new duty station

You will need a vehicle in Jacksonville. I tell you this right now, you do not wish to buy anything from the "dealers" outside the gate to the right.

Many folks on base are selling cars, there used to be a used car lot. The Credit unilon onbase also has repo sales every quarter, well they did back then.

Did you arrive ok? Was there a sponsor or at least a command rep at the airport?

I have friends all over Jacksonville, if you need anything let me know.

send me a PM and I'll give you my home number here and cell

I have a lot of good folks. Go look up a LT David Bates and tell him I, "FDL" he should know who that is (if not tell him "that freakin Dennis Lee) would appreciate it if he took you under his wing and helped you adjust around there. Last I knew the guy was still at NHJAX

Before you buy any vehicle in that town (especially anything close to the base-remember the closer to NAS the more unethical they are) contact me. My son in law is a mechanic, they live over on Arlington expressway. If he says the car's ok, I'm gonna believe him.

I will tell yuo that as far as used car lots go, just about any one of them over on Cassett Ave is reputable(wish I could remember some names) and in many cases if you offer to purchase a vehicle at about 75-80 off their listed price, they'll take it. Just have your financing done already thorugh your own sources. These places love setting up the finance angle but you'll pay more interest

How is it going there?
