Hey everyone its HN(SW) Cohan again. Just had a question about Captain's Mast and whether or not I am eligible for a "C" school. I went to mast last May for being late to work 6 times in 9 months but no later than 10 minutes. I will tell you what though, I deserved it....14/14, reduction in rank to E-2, and 7 days pay. I learned from it and turned my career around. Now I am being put up for CAP in march. I really want to find something that will keep me up to date as a corpsman but I dont think I am eligible anytime soon. Is it 36 months, 24 months or what? I am stuck here on the Comfort in Reduced Operating Status until '07 as a 0000. I need to be in the action doing what I do best and thats being a UNITED STATES NAVY CORPSMAN. I have never been more proud of anything in my life...wearing our badge with pride. Help me figure out what I am going to do.

Shipmate..

C-School's as well as "A" Schools you have to be 18 months Post Mast date. Unless granted a waiver by NPC and your detailers. I have only seen "1" person to date get a waiver.

Good Luck, Keep your nose clean.. you can come back from something like this!

Shipmate,

Why do you feel this way about this ship? Believe it or not you are doing your nation a valuable service. You may not think so, but if we have a national emergency again, you will be one of the ones who make sure the ship can get underway at a moments notice.

I realize your a HN.. Are you studying while supposedly doing "NOTHING"? Are you taking college courses? What are you doing to make sure you can get SOQ or SOY? When your HMC/HM1 Asks for a job to be done at 1559 and your supposed to get off at 1600 are you the one hiding? Or the one volunteering.

Shipmate, you are the proud owner of your own destiny. Make a plan, chart a course and take action. Get the Bib's out and study to make rate. Make sure when it is time for EVAL's to come out you force your CO to make you a EP.

It burns my butt when you juniors just don't seem to get it.

Ok off soapbox now.. Back to your regularly scheduled programming..

Chief,

Thank you very much for your insight. I really did word whatI said wrong. It only seems like we do nothing because the tasks we are given which are planned to take a week, we are done in two days. I am very proud of MY ship and our capabilities. Take Joint Task Force Katrina/Rita for example. We got the ship underway in two days with 165 personnel and picked up the rest of the crew at Naval Station Mayport, Florida. As a matter of fact my mid-term counseling was a 5.0 so far. After my mast I turned my butt around and I am recognized for my efforts almost every day by my OIC. I love being able to show off my ship to anyone that wants to see it. As far as studying, I am currently taking a course in Psych so I can better understand my patients needs. As far as the exam, I study 2-3 hours a day on and off the ship. We do have a lot of down time onboard so studying is the way to go. I have been going to http://www.corpsmanstudyguide.com/main.aspx (http://www.corpsmanstudyguide.com/main.aspx)as part of my main study regimen. I also like http://www.navystorekeeper.com which also has corpsman stuff on it. They have flash cards and such. So there you have it, I LOVE THE NAVY AND WHERE I AM STATIONED....i just need to go TAD more often. I am taking the Tactical Combat Casualty Course at Walter Reed in a few days so that should be fun. Once again...thanks chief for setting my mind right....I want to make everyone proud of me. I TAKE GREAT PRIDE IN THE UNIFORM THAT I WEAR AND THE HONOR TO DEFEND MY COUNTRY....HONOR, COURAGE, COMMITMENT.

Shipmate,

Don't sweat it. To be honest, I was a bit prickly that day as my kids were sick and I could not go to work. Things had not go as I had planned, and I was just on edge.

You sound like you have everything in order to get on down the road. Don't get me wrong, I have stuff in my record back from my HN days that while I did not go to MAST, I could easily have been sent there.

In those days Senior leadership took more control of issues when you screwed up if you get my drift. Some might have taken offense if it was them, but to be honest, I could and should have gone to Mast if it were not for HMCS Dale Dunn. He took care of me real good. ;-)

+1, I agree 100%.

I DID go to Mast when I was an HN. I actually got out of the Navy right after that. When I came back into the Navy 3 years later it was as an HA. I progressed from HA to HM2 in4 years.

As long as you have yourself straight now (which it sounds like you do), you will go far.

I also agree with your comment about the Senior Leadership taking more control Chief.

Peace,

Everyone who reads this:

This young HN (hopefully HM3 by now) is exactly what I want the HM rating to be. Jeff, you are an inspiration, a shining example of what it means to be an HM.

I applaude you. We all should, as you sound locked on target.
