Hello all,

I am writing from a public library in Washington State.

We have a patron who is trying to find a specific piece of information that we are having trouble locating.

They want the date when the Naval Hospital in Saigon closed.

Does anyone have this information or have any ideas where to find it?

This website http://www.fatherryan.org/navyvietnam/bases.htm gives me the date range 1950-1970 but it does not specifically mention the hospital nor is that date specific enough for us.

We have a print resource that states:

"Four years later, in 1963, Navy Station Hospital, Saigon was created. Ninety Hospital Corpsmen staffed the facility and provided care for U.S. and allied (Australian, New Zealand, Filipino, and South Vietnames) military, as well as South Vietnamese civilians. These medical personnel conducted routine medical care and treated victims of combat and terrorist actions until the hospital was transferred to the Army in 1966"

Again, a more specific date than "1966" would be appreciated.

In addition to any print resource recommendations I could also use any agency referral. Is there a museum/library dedicated to Navy Hospital Corps?

Many thanks for any help.

Cheers,

Let me ask around, I can contact 'Andre who works for BUMED tomorrow who is thier historian. He should be able to get me that info you need.

We have a museum at Naval Hospital Corps School, kinda just a display thingy, but no museum outright.

I teach at Naval Hospital Corps School, so any info you need send it here..

Thanks!

Here is the info I recieved from he historian at Bumed..

Hey Chief,

According to our records, the Navy’s Station Hospital in Saigon was in use from September 1963 to March 1966 when it was turned over to the U.S. Army. The hospital at NSA DaNang was in operation from January 1966 to June 1970.

Hope this helps.

Very Respectfully,

André

The only hospital in Saigon was the 3rd Field Hospital. It was active until 12/1/72 when the unit was deactivitated. See map below for all Army Hospitals in Vietnam in 1968, When troops were being sent home in 1970 more and more Army Hospitals were closed and returned to the States. In 1970 only 13 hospitals were left.

I know I'm ressurecting an old post, however, there is an excellent resource about Station Hospital, Saigon. It's titled: Station Hospital Saigon A Navy Nurse in Vietnam, 1963-1964. It was written by LCDR Bobbi Hovis, NC USN (Ret.)

It's an excellent read. I got my autographed copy from the US Naval Institute book store.
