Well now....Where to start....First off, thank you to Da Chief for giving me this opportunity. I am sure we will all have some fun and learn a few things. Now, A little about myself...I graduated the Hallowed Halls of NHCS in 1993. Class 93-100 to be exact. MY instructors were HM1 Rosenbarger, HM1 Chamberlain and HM2 Venizia. From there I got orders to Naval Hospital Oakland. There, I was part of the color guard and closed down the NSHS branch of OR tech School as well as Letterman Army Medical Center. While at NHO, I worked in 8-E, Labor and delivery. From there I went to FMSS at Camp Pendleton. From there I went to India Co. 3rd. Bn. 3rd. Marines. Following that stint, I went to 1st. Marine Aircraft Wing, where I was with HMH-362, HMH-463, and HMT-301. My next tour was at Naval Hospital Camp Pendleton. There I was the EMS Coordinator for over 3 years. Then I was at NMCB-3 in Port Hueneme, Ca. There is where I did my 2nd. trip to Oki and my first and second to "the Box". And that brings me to where I am now....at the Cradle of Navy Medicine...NHCS.

PeqasusHM. Thanks for being a member of corpsman.com. I have found your input very helpful. I look forward to the more hands on approach at NHCS.

Question. I ship out September 26 (go into active duty)
Boot: After processing week and the 8 weeks, it looks like I’ll graduate the week of Thanksgiving. My question is: What are the standard days NHCS shuts down during the Thanksgiving holiday and during Christmas and New Years holiday?

I need to start planning if I will be coming home, if at all, for the holidays.

Thank you for your time.

During the holidays, Christmas, there is an event called "exodus", where all students are encouraged to take leave over the holiday period. The exact details will be passed to you as the time closes. As far as Thanksgiving, the schoolhouse will get a 96. Just remember, if you burn leave on Thanksgiving, you will have less during Christmas.

I have a better understanding now of how to approach the holidays.

Thank You.

OMG. Just reading this thread and thinking back, I entered NSHS Great Lakes almost 31 years ago......I feel like an old fart. The memories keep coming back, the long walk up to the hospital in the freezing weather (that's where we ate our meals). My orders had me reporting in the day before Thanksgiving. I was wondering why in the world did the military do that. A short time of cleaning floors and I was in class, graduating in February 1977.

Any pictures from around there? I'm interested in what it looks like now, compared to when I was there. Just reading through posts on this site, appears to be the same building.

Good Day Senior Chiefs, Petty Officers, Shipmates, fellow recruits...

This Is DEP Recruit Mendoza. I am going to basic training on March, hopefully will accomplish Sailorization, and get on to NHCS. Ultimately going FMF.

1- Any Tips on Mental and Physical Preparation?
2- Duty Stations/Dream Sheet?
3- Recommendations, things to Know??

I’m 21 y/o. Pre-Med A.A Degree. I’m not a Spoiled Kid, had to fight my own life since age 10. Had been working ever since, have a passion for Medicine, and have recently committed to make a Difference with my abilities and passion. Without a Finance Degree, I am currently leaving my Position as an International banking manager, which I only hold because it pays my bills. Silent, committed, and always giving my best effort. I am not nervous, but I am expectant and unsure about so many details, and something’s I should know in order to get along better…….any Father to Son Advice??

Mendoza, google is your friend. Most of your future duty stations will have a website, learn where its at and book mark it. Physically prepare yourself for FMSS, there will be plenty of PT, and humps. Work on endurance, start hiking with a 40-50 lb rucksack. Do that as much as you can till you hit 8 miles. Then for good measure work on a 10-12 mile hump. March for 50 minutes, and take a ten minute break, during break change out your socks, drink plenty of water, and take some fruit with you.

Mentally- Be open minded, realize that you will be taking orders, even if you don't like them, or they make no sense to you. A great leader is usually a greater follower, roll with the punches, follow orders, and don't be a wise guy. Keep your nose clean, but at the same time do not be timid. Most Petty Officers recognize the hardchargers, and this can be your chance to show your worth, and possible to attain a leadership role where ever you are.

The FMF is a great place to be, while I was in FMSS I was platoon sgt, and after my Chief was injured during a hump, became platoon leader- the most important thing to remember is although your Navy, you will excel if you think like a Marine. Get the mindset, and you will not only be a great Corpsman but one respected by his/her Marines and Sailors. No one likes a dirtbag, wear that uniform with pride, take care of your charges, and better yet take care of yourself.

i will be deploying soon, and in case I don't have a chance to talk to you here, i want to wish you luck and god speed.

HM2 Acevedo out...

Good advice. Just remember, FMTB is also a training command and you are there to learn. Be open minded and have fun. Remember that you will make friends that will last forever and you will only remember the good times. You will be learning how to interact with another branch of service
