Naval Hospital Corps School
Hospital Corps School, Great Lakes, Illinois was one of the first two schools established at the Naval Training Center, Great Lakes. It opened in Jan 1917, one month before World War I. There were only twenty Hospital Apprentices in the first class. The enrollment quickly increased to three hundred Hospital Apprentices in April 1917 and grew to 2000 by August 1918.
In 1941, enrollment expanded to meet World War II needs. In 1974, the present buildings were opened with an expansion of classrooms and office spaces completed in 1990. Additional barracks’ opened in 1993 and 1998. A laboratory training wing is due to open in September of 2000.
The curriculum has varied in length and composition over the years. Currently, the course is fourteen weeks in length and includes medical fundamentals, emergency medical procedures, nursing procedures, general military training and health promotion topics. Additionally, students have two weeks practical experience in “hands on” nursing care before graduation.
