Naval Hospital Corps School

Hospital Corps School, Great Lakes, Illinois was one of the first two schools established at the Naval Training Center, Great Lakes. It opened in Jan 1917, one month before World War I. There were only twenty Hospital Apprentices in the first class. The enrollment quickly increased to three hundred Hospital Apprentices in April 1917 and grew to 2000 by August 1918.

In 1941, enrollment expanded to meet World War II needs. In 1974, the present buildings were opened with an expansion of classrooms and office spaces completed in 1990. Additional barracks’ opened in 1993 and 1998. A laboratory training wing is due to open in September of 2000.

The curriculum has varied in length and composition over the years. Currently, the course is fourteen weeks in length and includes medical fundamentals, emergency medical procedures, nursing procedures, general military training and health promotion topics. Additionally, students have two weeks practical experience in “hands on” nursing care before graduation.

Just a footnote

I was at work with a few down moments and noted a few things while searching Wikipedia -
In 1998 Robert Ingram was awarded the MOH, making him the 4th HM for RVN - total of 15 MOH for entire Navy.
Of 2565 KIA from Navy in RVN, 620+ were HMs - roughly 24%.
Of 4178 WIA for Navy, 3353 were HMs, >75%.
Yeah, we took a few hits, luckliy I guess wasn't a KIA or WIA.

Our motto was " One shot of Rocephin cures the mistakes of ten shots of Tequila". Luckily I drank beer and only chased "Norte Americana chicas"

Back in my day - it was 16 cc of penicillin - 2 four cc in each cheek; twice a day for 2 days. Then 10 days of tetracycline. Of course, no liberty, etc. for a while. Plus the note in one's SRB, unless you knew a "doc" real well.

As to today'sremedy, if you are getting treated for GC, etc., I don't use lidocaine to help with pain from the rocephin.

Biggest mess I ever saw. Kids headed to mexico, lots of transvestite hookers in those dark bars in TJ. You can guess the rest after too much alcohol.

Luckily, my brain function didn't shut off from too many cervesas. It's crazy what a farm boy from Minnesota will do unleashed from mama's apron strings for teh first time!!

I forgot, didn't have the TVs in my days, I don't think. But they can but estrogen, etc. and do their own sexchange hormones. I won't even go farther. That's gotta be a strange thing for some of the farm boys.

I graduated from Corps school at San Diego in 1972. Our class had maybe the only US Marine to attend and graduate Hospital Corps A school. He was a Sergeant, who had somehow got it written into his enlistment contract and he finally forced them to honor it. I had our graduation picture out last weekend looking at it.

My mother sent me this photo about a month ago. Brought back a LOT of memories from San Dog!! I remember we use to head down to Club A on Revolution Avenue. Even went down to Papas and Beer in Rosarito, Mexico. That was a blast. Even had a couple members of the Hell's Angels there.

To be young again......

That's me on the stage just after graduation.
