As you may know, I just got a new desktop about a month ago. The last one crashed due to really crappy antivirus protection that resulted in many trojan horse viruses. The new one is FULLY protected.haha. The problem is I need Office for it, as the last came loaded with it. So I have been looking.

The online bookstore has a version for sale called "Office pro Plus 2007" I DO NOT want the crappy student version, as I use all of the traditional office programs for work presentations, etc. Especially PowerPoint and Excel. I found this online: Office Pro Plus2007 includes: Word, Publisher, PowerPoint, Access, Communicator, Outlook, InfoPath. The problem is that the bookstore is selling this for GET THIS: $70.00. No, not a typo. The student version at Staples or whatever is usually $150.00, and that is just Word, PowerPoint, and Excel, . I had to enter my student ID and sign a Microsoft agreement to get this price, so I am hoping it is just an ENORMOUS GIGANTIC discount for college students. What I am afraid of is that the licensing will run out when I am no longer a student, or that I will have to keep buying new versions. If that is the case, I will be better off to buy the traditional suite. And what in the hell is InfoPath and Communicator? Also, will I be able to install this on multiple computers, as I am currently in the market for 2 notebooks (one for me, one for John so he will leave mine alone:)) And i will want to put office on both of those as well for use in class.

Any help? hints? general toughts or ideas? I have even called some software dealers, and can't find out what is up. I have learned in life that what appears to be too good to be true generally is.Thought you computer-saavy guys may know something. If not, my next stop is Microsoft, but I am trying to avoid that, as I was just on the phone with them for an hour the other day about some antivirus software that wouldn't register.

Damn, CSUF charges us students $86....

http://www.titanbookstore.com/SiteText.aspx?id=3465

(I think faculty & staff can get it for $35)

It is called the Microsoft Student Select Software program and you could probably type that into Google/Yahoo to find out all you need to know.

According to the propaganda:

"Office can be installed on two computers - a desktop and a portable device - an unlimited amount of times (if the PC were to crash, you can reinstall the software).

When the software is installed, you will be required to register the product with Microsoft or the product will not install. The registration will take the Key Code of the CD-Rom and a Serial number from the computer(s) and store them in a Microsoft Database, as long as these two numbers match, the CD-Rom will keep installing on that computer(s)."

HMC,
Go to ACADEMIC SUPERSTORE

Since you in school you qualify.

We have bought Office 2007 PRO for real cheap there and it is legit. You have to jump through a few wickets to do it, but for the price it is well worth it.

Ask Crazy and DeeDee.

So I will need to buy 2 copies of the software then, as I need to install it on John's notebook, too, right?

No, only one package of software.

I can't say for sure, but I know Microsoft does many special discounts and this may be one. For example, I was able to buy a full version of Office through my employer for something ridiculous like $10 or $20! This was a special 'home use only' discount to employees of a large company who obviously purchases many licenses. So this could be very legitimate - ask to be sure.

One other thought that may or may not work for you. There is now software very comparable to MS Office that you can download for FREE. It's called Open Office (here's the link http://www.openoffice.org/ ). I know it's hard to believe but this does virtually everything Office does EXCEPT Outlook (that's a big 'but'!) for free. And it is completely compatible with Office.

Just something to consider for those on a tight budget!
