1. my ship date is April 30th. what kind of weather can i expect at boot camp?

2. i believe i will be finishing boot around July 4th, and my family will be coming out to see me. are there any events i can tell about?

3. am i allowed to have any possessions at Corpsman school? (coffee maker, cell phone, guitar, laptop)

1. Extremes. Hot or cold, no in between (my first round at boot was during the early summer, and there were days we were in utilities with our jackets on and still cold!)
2. No idea.
3. They give you a bed, what more do you need? :) I had a cell phone while I was there, it just has to be off and locked up during school hours (in your room, not in your bag!) I know people had coffee makers, etc. There are PC's up there, don't know if you'd need to bring a laptop (there isn't a ton of room for possessions, and it's one more thing you'd have to worry about). They have a computer / internet lab in the library on the main side and computer labs in the barracks to do your school work on after school hours. I'd recommend against bringing a laptop to NHCS. Guitar, well, again, you don't have a lot of space. I'd leave it also (just another reason to bust through the course, so you can get back to playing your 6 string!)

Ok I feel really stupid for not being 100% sure on this (being that Im from Chicago) but I think the Taste of Chicago is just winding down at about that time. The fireworks at Grant Park on the 3rd of July are quite impressive but in my opinion the ones on base last year were 10 times better.

You can have your laptop but you will need your own wireless internet connection - my son uses a Sprint Broadband card and has really good luck with keeping his connection open.

if your going to boot in great lakes then be prepared to stand outside at attention in formation for long periods of time... hot of cold.

i believe the zoo is pretty cool in chicago

i remember in a school (i went to san diego) you didnt need a coffee maker cuz the chow hall wasnt very far (or the eclub lol). i had a few friends who also had guitars but space is limited cuz all we had was a wall locker for all our belongings... you can call the A school quarter deck or check the school website to ask those kind of questions. I like to keep things light cuz the more crap you have the more stuff gets inspected.

rule of thumb... KISS (keep it simple)

good luck in boot camp. it goes by fast!!!

Very unlikely.

I’ll recycle this thread.

Boot: After processing week and the 8 weeks, it looks like I’ll graduate the week of Thanksgiving. My question is: What are the standard days NHCS shuts down during the Thanksgiving holiday and during Christmas and New Years holiday?

I need to start planning if I will be coming home, if at all, for the holidays.

I searched the forums using "NHCS", this was the best thread I found.

The Dirty Name:

Post your question in the following Forum. It is specific to the Naval Hospital Corps School. The moderator PegasusHM will be able to answer that question about Corps school and time off during the holiday schedules.
