Hi. I am stationed in Okinawa and I am hoping to go to a ship for my next tour. But, I am interested in learing more about the S&R field for HM's. I have googled and haven't found anything interesting. I like the military life but I HATE hospitals. I just want to ensure that I never step foot in another one unless, I am the C.O. or giving birth. Any advice?

Thanks

Why, oh why did you beceome a "HOSPITAL" Corpsman if you did not want to go to a Hospital?

Dude that's like saying you want to be a cook but don't want to be around food?

It can happen, but not very likely. You will end up doing Shore duty at a hospital or a clinic. Just the way it is.

As for SAR info.. PM "Poolzer" he is our Resident SAR Expert as that is what he is..
;-)

Good Luck!

P.s I hate Hospital Duty as well, but it is a job we have to do.

Awesome Response Smith! This is the first thread in a while that got my attention. Man I desperately want to be with the Marines, and working in a Hospital or Clinic will give me more experience to help them.

NP i do what i can. From talking to a few other Corpsman and one who tryed for 8401 this C School is very hard to get into. Only a few slots open you have to be on top of oy game to get into. Plus i think its a fleet returnee only school so no getting it out of A School.

Here is a good site for looking up NEC for HM or any other Rate.

Im sure its been posted a few times before.

Unfortunately a lot of the info out there about our program is outdated. What was just posted was the guidelines years ago.

Right now, this actual minute, here is the gouge...this can change within the next 5 minutes so the BEST way to get info into the best damn NEC in the Navy is talking to the NEC Detailer and your career counselor.

NEC 8401 Search and Rescue / In-Flight MEd Tech / Air Ambulance HM
We are accepting people right out of A school right now, that pipe line is:
HM School -> AVT 8406 school -> Naval Aircrew Candidate School (NACCS) 8202 -> 1st station SAR to get qualified.

AVT school will teach you all you need to know to handle a mishap site, do physicals and learn sick call. If you cannot pass the schools past this school, you will remain an AVT. You will train for NACCS while at this school with help of SAR HM's stationed over at NACCS.

At NACC and as our SAR fitness test goes, the info posted above is obsolete. You must do 4 palms foward pull ups with NO kipping min, carry 2 55 pound dumbells 100 yards, stepping over 4 objects (simulating carrying a patient in a litter over terrain) and then walk, not run, 1 mile with our 45 pound SAR litter on your back in under 16 minutes. During NACCS you will do a lot of pull ups. You will do at least 2 hours a day dry land PT and 2 hours a day pool work. The Pool work is not for rescue swimmer, but to make you proficient in the water, with your out test being required to swim a mile in your flight suit, jumping off the platform and swimming under water and performing your strokes with confidence. NACCS is 3 weeks long.

Station SAR commands:

Cherry Point NC
Pax River, MD
Key West, FL
Yuma, AZ
Fallon, NV
China Lake, CA
Whidbey Island, WA
Guam

Pre req's are that you must past an initial flight physical for rotor wing SAR crewman, complete class 2 swim qualification and be an EMT-B. Get those 3 and be able to do those 4 pull ups, perfectly, and you will do fine throughout our pipeline.

For those with experience and want to go thru, you have this route:

Avt ->NACCS -> SERE -> OEMS, Army Flight Medic, TCCC or whatever course equivilent we're sending people thru (it changes so often) -> either H-60F/H or H-60S crewman school then onto an HS/HSC sea duty squadron

West Coast (San Diego, Guam, Japan)
HS 2,4,6,8,10
HSC 21, 23, 25

East Coast (Norfolk, Jacksonville)
HS 3,5,7,11,15
HSC 22, 26, 28

Read my other threads in the squadron area to learn more about our community or PM me with questions.

Again, the best way to get the latest info is talking to your career counselor and the NEC Detailer which is HMC Eddie Matanane eddiearnold.matanane@navy.mil

We're strictly a blue side billet for now. Squadron bound aboard aircraft carriers (HS) and small boats/USNS ships (HSC). As much as this site pushes green side, the blue side is still going strong and a valued part of the US Navy. Hundreds of blue side ship and squadron HM billets are out there for the taking.

FMSS is not a requirement for us, but its a benefit because it gives you that much more training in field medicine.

Contact your CCC and HMC Matanane for the latest scoop into our community.
