View Full Version : marine divisions?
I am inNHCS and i am trying to get ordersto become FMF and I was wondering how many marine divisions there were, which ones are inor are going to iraq, and aso I was wonderind about something called forward marine divisions and what corpsman do who are assigned to them? I was pretty much told if you are with a forward division in iraq you are going to see more fire andmay bein more of acombatposition as a corpsman to help or save your marines.

There are 4 Marine Divisions. 3 are active 1 is reserve. 1stMARDIV west coast Camp Pendleton, 2ndMARDIV east coast Camp Lejune, And I believe 3rd MARDIV is based in Oki or Hawaii. 4th MARDIV is the reserves.

you must be talking abouta victor unit or ( grunt unit ). Those are the ones you want to get in locked with if you want to go out on deployment(s). I can't say who is leaving or not , just because of OPSEC but if you don't get with a deployable unit then you can always put in a request chit to hop on a unit that will deploy. We are always coming and going.
So, how do you ask for assignment to a Marine Division out of Corps school nowadays? Do you still get a dream sheet to list your top 3 choices? Do you get to talk to the detailer and tell him/her green side, victor unit please? Do you get to do that even if you have been hamstrung by a messed up NCS enlistment? This has got so screwed up. Don't these people know there's a war on?:X

I got a new corpsman that just extended his service here. He was a NCS,, whatever,, by the way do you really get that bonus? But thats good on all of you who decided to become corpsman. Even though some of us didn't get the bonus we still hope you treatus forsome beers when you get here.
:dude:
I'm sure they still have the dream sheets. I'll ask my LPO, who just transfered from corps school. I don't know if you ever knew him, HM1 Porter? He's one hell of leader,,and runner. I can tell you this, from the batch of boots that came in, was said to me that "this is what they gave me" Meaning you will be given orders to which unit you will go to. You should check out the web sites for each Division, and check out the"local area" <----big hint. . Different strokes for different folks..

Chief, how are corpsmen dispersed/organized in a Marine Division? I mean, are the corpsmen assigned to a company within a regiment and stay there? Or do they wind up assigned to some headquarters group providing medical services to all? I know as an AVT, I was always assigned to the medical department even though I was squadron. How do the Marines do it?

oldavt,
here is how corpsman are dispersed in Marine Division, though keep in mind i'm only use to theLejeune area.
Corpsman are usuallyordered into the Marine Division HQBN unit, then they aredispersed to the various Bns with in MarDiv. Some may stay with the one Bn their entire time, some rotate to a different Bn or maybe even to a Regiment. Just depends on the HM and the needs of MarDiv.
There are different types of units with MarDiv: Tanks, LAR, AABN, CEB, Recon, Artillery, Infantry, etc. So an HM can be with any one of these unit at any given time during their tour with the MarDiv.
I hope this didn't confuse you any further.
No, it helped a lot in my understanding. You go to HQ, and they disperse you where you are needed. I didn't realize just how diverse a Marine Division is. It's gotta make getting that FMF pin a challenge.
A further question if you please. Does assignment to the Marine Division also mean you might wind up working at the base hospital? Or is that a Navy command? So many questions, so little understanding.

If your assigned to a Marine Division, You will "NOT" be working in a hosptial. Only time he will see one is to say "hi", Wave from the Humvee, or dropping a pt off..

Are FMF corpsmen ever assigned (without the corpsman asking) to Recon, or is that position only filled by volunteers who pass the requirements? Thanks.

It is "possible" for any Corpsman to be temporarily assigned to duties in support of Recon, however, it is HIGHLY unlikely. It is even more unlikely that these temporary duties would include any sort of real world operational mission. Safety Corpsman on a training range or admin/clinic assistance maybe; but things would have to be pretty goofed up for a substitute Doc to be assigned as an operator.
