View Full Version : Read any good books lately?
What do you like to read in your spare time? I know most of us don't have much spare time let alone time to read a book but IF you have read a book or even an article and would like to share your thoughts on it please post it here - I am always looking for new authors to try out.

Lone Survivor by Marcus Luttrell was awesome. Its an eyewitness account of a Navy SEAL op that went bad in Afghanistan in 2005. Written in a very conversational tone by the man who survived for several days thanks to his training and some local villagers. Its just like sitting down and listening to someone tell it. I highly recommend it, even if you're not a big SEAL fan.
As an added bonus, he's a corpsman too.

The Art of Happiness - By his Holiness the Dali Lama
Simple little book that helped me change from an immature little teenager to an immature little man. It gives you perspective on how to deal with life's little annoyances in positive and productive ways.

Anything by Terry Brooks. I've read every book he's written except for his latest release which I'll try to get in the next couple of months.
found a good series for fans of Fern Michaels - about a group of women called "the Sisterhood" - If you like Fern Michaels style you will enjoy these too - they can be read separately and you don't feel like you need to go get the previous books to know what is going on.

Just finish the Chesty Puller Biblio - Awesome, hopefully I learn from it and treat my subordinants with the same love and respect that Gen Puller did.

Another book I read (last week) was "the Kite Runners" another good book, told the story of growing up in Afganastan prior to the Russian occupation and the Taliban. Gives insite on the Afgan culture.

last but not least is my favorite book of all time- "Starship Troopers" the movie has nothing on the book, I like the political referances which I agree to SOOOOOOOOOO much ---- if you don't serve you don't deserve to participate in goverment.... Thats just me though.

I love reading about my Steelers. This is the latest I just got this Christmas and I'm in the middle of it now.

Not only does Dan talk about his 75 years with the Steelers ... but he chronicles the beginning days of the NFL when the league was founded. Something he kept telling his father, George Halas, and others to do before they left us. They never did. He calls himself the last man standing and felt it was his duty to do this for those who love football. Good read so far and so very down to earth -- just like the man himself.
Found another vampiry author - Jennifer Armintrout - found 2 books by her accidentally at the used book store - loved the idea that they were set in Michigan (Grand Rapids area). Flew through the first two books and loaned them to a friend of Dan's who is into Laurell K Hamilton books - he's hooked now too. Found book 3 and read it already - now I have to wait til JUNE when the 4th book is being released.

Another good book that I liked as a kid and so on was Where the Red Fern grows. It's a really good book, kind of a tear jerker though.

Wasn't that made into a movie? I recall my mother giving me a list of really good "older" movies and that title was one of them. I still haven't seen it, nor read the book. Thanks for reminding me.
Here it is:
Release Date:
21 June 1974 (USA)
Plot Outline:
Where the Red Fern Grows is the heartwarming and adventurous tale for all ages about a young boy and his quest for his own red-bone hound hunting dogs.

Now what about "Ole Yeller"?
I loved the Incredible Journey!
Was wandering in the bookstore on Saturday and came across book one of a new trilogy by Nora Roberts called Blood Brothers - looked interesting and I like her as an author so I bought it - YEAH!!! Boy am I glad I didn't pass this one up - can't wait for book two to come out in May.
Currently reading "A World Without Us", having finished the last in Tom Robbins' catalog.
Few I have read carries me as well as Robbins' stuff.
Mindbenders, but Real Fun.

I am trying to finish the "Fire" Essay series by Sebastian Junger who wrote "Perfect Storm". He discusses combat up close and personal in Bosnia, Sierra Leone, Kosovo, and Afghanistan.
It has a lot of very enlightening material.

From the home to the boardroom to the squad room, Verbal Judo arms you with the skills and know-how you need when faced with day-to-day power plays.

Currently in the middle of "Horse Soldiers" by Doug Stanton and it's got me hooked good. It's about some of our U.S. Special Forces bubbas who carry out missions in Afghanistan on horseback.
Next recommendation is a series of paperbacks by John Ringo. Start with "Ghost", then "Kildar", and read the list of the next 3 to ensure you read them in order. GREAT series.
Another good one I read this spring was "The Best Game Ever" by Blackhawk Down author Mark Bowden. It's about the 1958 GIANTS vs. COLTS football game.
I'll go ahead and throw in one of my all time favorites, the "Brotherhood of the Rose" by David Morrell. If you enjoy this one, pick up "Fraternity of the Stone" and others in that series.
Just some recommendations.....

I read too much as is but listing off favorite authors Hunter S. Thompson,Jack Kerouac,Stephen Hunter,Brian Jacques, and quite a few more but I am too sleep deprived to remember them all. Currently working my way through 2003 Corpsman Manual and a book on survival/last ditch medicine. Before that it was World Of Microbiology And Immunology followed up by Special Forces Medical Handbook. basically running through all my medical textbooks before heading off to RTC. Two books I read over and over though are Advanced Gunsmithing(Vickery 1940) and Modern Gunsmith(Howe 1941). I'm a bit of a hobby gunsmith with minor dreams of having my own shop when I get old. So if you have any questions on guns feel free to ask away.
