Kane'ohe Bay corpsman dies in Afghanistan

A Navy hospital corpsman stationed at Marine Corps Base Hawai'i, Kane'ohe Bay, died Tuesday from wounds suffered in combat operations in Kunar Province, Afghanistan, the Pentagon said yesterday.

Petty Officer 3rd Class Mark R. Cannon, 31, of Lubbock, Texas, was assigned to the 3rd Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division, 3rd Marine Expeditionary Force.
Cannon reported to Hawai'i in November 2005, Marine Corps Base Hawaii said in a news release yesterday.

Cannon died of gunshot wounds to his chest, according to the web site of the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal newspaper.

Cannon was a graduate of Coronado High School in Lubbock and was the son of Tom and Becky Cannon, the newspaper said.

The Avalanche-Journal said the corpsman's father is a former Lubbock County court-at-law judge and that his mother was executive director of the Lubbock Rape Crisis Center for 30 years.

Cannon's awards included the Purple Heart, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, Navy Good Conduct Medal, Combat Action Ribbon, National Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Sea Service Deployment Ribbon and Expert Pistol Shot Ribbon.
