View Full Version : Becoming a FMF
Hello,
I am 23 years old male, and i will be joining the Navy Reserve soon. I'm really interested in becomining a Marine Medic, but i not getting much info from the recruiters on the timeline of becoming one or the schools you must attend. So I would like to know where A school is and how long that is, also C school same info and is there any other training i will be attending or any other schools if i am assigned to a marine unit. I would really appreciate any info. Thanks a lot

well A school is inGreat Lakes - Hospital Corps School. FMSS school is either in Camp Lejune NC or Camp Pendleton, CA. Are you comming in a an NRAC or NCS? As far a extra traning, that would depend on you, your time line and if there is money available. Are you wanting to go to an infantry unit, Arty. bulk fuel etc.... oh and by the way, MEDIC is an Army thing...

Okay a few things..
NRAC is no more.. dis-established this month only program to come in now is NPSB, here is the timeline/pipeline..
Boot Camp Apprx: 10 weeks
"A" School: 14 weeks but now is work at your own pace.. So you can take th full 14 or some have been done in as early as 6 weeks depending on you..
"FMSS" is in Camp Lejeune or Camp Pendleton.. "52" days..
All of this is continous from start to finnish, I.e.. you you report to bootcamp, then to "A" School, then I get you a Order Mod that sets you up with a date in either of the 2 Marine bases for FMSS..
All in all expect to spend 6-8 months on Active Duty then you report back to your Reserve Center to drill once a month and do active duty once a year for 2 weeks unless your mobilized..
Hope this answers all..
BTW If you do go FMSS option, the signing bonus right now is $20,000
You recieve it after you have obtained your 8404 NEC..(FMSS)

Is the $20,000 bonus only for non-prior enlisted? If so, is there any type of bonus forprior enlisted.I'm a former Marine and I'm considering enlisting as a corpsman in the Navy reserve. The bonus isn't a deciding factor, but it would be nice. Also, I was an E-4 in the Marines and have a B.A. in psych. What rank would I enlist at?

Hmm.. I would be pulling info out of my butt right now and guessing, I would say talk to a recruiter and see what they say.
1. you will have to go to Corps School, 14 weeks, (At your own pace could be shorter)
2. Even though you are a prior Marine, you will have to go to FMSS.
I know that anyone who is going 8404 though are getting good bonus'es..
I think you might be eligible for something, let me know what you find out and I will ping it off some friends of mine to make sure you are not getting screwed..

ok big question, I leave for boot in a week. Are they still doing the 20k fmss bonus? Can I still get it or am I too late?

Dude,
Are you joining for a big "PAYDAY" or for the Navy and Marine Corps..
By your answers I have seen.. you have to do some soul searching.. It seems like you are losing focus on what this is all about.
Are you Reserve? If so yes they still have the 20K bonus for FMSS after A-School, you don't go home inbetween etc.. your on A/D until you are finished with FMSS..
Hope this helps..

Dude,
Are you joining for a big "PAYDAY"
No not at all, All I mean by this is if there is free money to be had then of course i'm going to try and go for it. But if I can't get it its not going to keep me from joining. And over the past couple of weeks my goals not changed, they have more of expanded out more toward the future. I am looking into the STA-21 program right now, which I will be trying to get into as soon as possible. And not to mention I am extremely nervous and anxious right now. I leave for for San Diego Monday and will be flying down to Great Lakes on Wed. And i'll be in MEPs on Tuesday, so if there is a bonus i'd like to see if i'm eligible, if not not a big deal.

all of the NPSB people I saw recieved a 20k bonus. But beware, my room mate at corps school is NPSB, is in FMSS right now, and one week after that ends he deploys to the beach without an ocean (Iraq if your slow). Just be aware that you might not just leave home for a little while and then go back home with all the benefits and none of the pain.

KentuckyBoy,
I have a bridge to sell you if your interested..
Your Old roommate is feeding you a line of bull. Hell he doesn't even know what unit he will be assigned to yet until he affiliates. He has to do workups etc prior to shipping out as well..
These are the guys who start bad scuttlebutt.. Next thing you know there will be a chopper outside his grad to pick him up personally to take him over..
Don't believe everything you hear..

Is the 20,000 dollar bonus retro-active? I went to FMSS in the 70's.

Thanks. I guess I'll have to say that I did it for the glory of it all rather than the money.

haha, roger that. the word that was passed to me from him was that he went to the detailer to try and change his orders and they said he couldn't. When he asked why, they told him he was on a platform to deploy right after FMSS. I have heard of people who have actually left FMSS before grad date to go with a unit deploying. I have never actually met these people so who knows. You would know more than I, but that's what I was told. The overall idea is that if you are NPSB, it might not be that after FMSS you go home for the rest of your contract.

Greetings all. Click here for my introduction thread: http://www.corpsman.com/forum/showthread.php?p=10616#post10616.
I am also interested in FMF
HM-8404 Field Medical Service Technician
The 20 big ones may be out of my reach. My elistment guarantees contract does not have this down.
Currently:
1. Hospital Corpsman "A" School Guarantee
2. Advance Paygrade E-3/B.S. Degree
3. Enlistment bonus college credit: $8,000
4. N/A
When I go back to MEPS can I have the FMF put into my new contract before taking the active duty oath?
Is there such thing as a second contract you sign?
Thanks for you'alls time.

You can get your contract changed after you take the oath for being a depper. I'm not sure if you can change after you go to boot camp. My recruiter supposedly said you can get only fmf in your contract but I don't really believe it just because from what I have read and heard.

Hello I'm brand new to these forums, but I will be leaving you all in a couple days for RTC.
-In Response to The_Dirty_Name: I beleive that you volunteer for FMF somewhere down the road (either in "A" school or FMSS), or that is what my recruiter told me at least.
I will be doing what ever I can to become and 8404.
I am currently going Active Duty for 5 years. No bonus, but it's not about the money. If I can save one life, I figure it is worth it, even if it means I sacrifice my own.
Anyways on a lighter note :), I thoroughly enjoyed your web site.
Best regards,

nirvana6 awesome mind zone your are in. Hey until the bullets start flying and you think about who will support your family if you die then you never know how you will respond!
Seaman Recruit Mills
If you are going to be a Corpsman, and you going active and you are a male; you WILL be going to FMSS.
