When I got out of the Nav in 96 I had the FMF ribbon, did that convert to the FMF pin? Did you still have to do all those classes and tests? I was hoping that they got grandfathered in.

You are still authorized to wear the FMF ribbon since you have earned it, however you must now complete the PQS for the warfare device and then take written and oral boards in order to earn your pin. There was no grandfathering in place, and truthfully, some of the required material is a bit ridiculous (who cares how fast AMTRACs travel in reverse), so good luck. The program can be tailored to the section of the FMF that you are attached to (Wing, MLG or Division) however it is my understanding that if you earn it in the Wing and transfer to Division, you must complete the PQS for Division prior to wearing it there.

Since you have earned the ribbon, you are still authorized to wear it.
Also, as stated the Enlisted Fleet Marine Force Warfare Specilist (EFMFWS). The Fleet Marine Force Ribbon was classified as a designator, though not a warfare qualification.
This is the reason that you have to complete the PQS based on the Specific Section for whom you are stationed with. If you do earn you Pin while you are in Division, and you transfer to Group or Wing, you will have to do the specific section for Group or Wing. The rule of the program still apply, you'll have 12 months to requalify in the specific section.
We have the PQS Study guides posted on the Main Site. Look to the menu and click on the plus sign by the Study Guide/Inst Link.
It's fun learning all the information about the Marine Corps.

This should explain it pretty good this is from OPNAVINST 1414.4A N093 20 Feb 04
b. Those individuals who previously qualified for the FMF
ribbon will retain the FMF designator, however they will not be
entitled to wear the FMF insignia until completing another FMF
assignment and meeting all requirements outlined in this
instruction. Those personnel E-1 and above are required to
complete core and platform specific PQS requirements as outlined
in paragraph 6 upon return to a FMF assignment.
I hope that clears things up.
