I sent this today, it was my 2nd email out to my coworkers, I am trying to collect donations for the Corpsman memorial at Pendelton-
Brothers and Sisters,
I have received 3-4 emails regarding this raiser, I think this is a worthy cause- for those who don't know what a Corpsman is here you go- A Corpsman is a Marine's and Sailor's best friend, our nickname is "Doc" and a motivated Corpsman serving along his/her Marines is called a "Devil Doc". Upon leaving the military many "Docs" go into the EMS and Fire service, I cannot begin to tell you how many questions I field from my junior (and sometimes senior enlisted) Corpsman on the Fire Service- Right here in OFD I know of 3-4 more x-corpsman, and many times its good to sit down and talk "war" stories. The Army equivalent is a combat medic, which have many strong ties with corpsman, sometimes we sit across from each other during a class or assigned to work in the same units out in the war. The corpsman has been there for his Marines since the birth of the corps, 1 assisted his squad lifting the flag at Iwo Jima, and 15 made the ultimate sacrifice due to the Beirut bombing, at the USMC Museum i was proud to see the "Docs" who were awarded the Medal of Honor next to Marines who also had the MoH.
With that being said, this memorial is dedicated to those who gave the ultimate sacrifice for their country, maybe 1 or 2 were destined to be a brother firefighter if it weren't for this war. I will donate 100 dollars (basically my bonus check), so far only 2-3 individuals and Station 6B have stated they will make a donation.
We in the Fire Service have always prided ourselves in our accomplishments and "never forget" mentality of our fallen brothers and sisters, please use this as an extension of that and "adopt" this memorial to those who might of joined us in the fire service. My last shift before activation is on the 1st, I will still be in the Orlando till the 3rd. Any funds can be sent to me or dropped off at station 11.
This website is a little dated but gives a good history about the Corpsman-
