Add $5,400 to your active duty GI Bill
Montgomery GI Bill Increased Benefit Contribution Program.
(aka MGIB "Buy-Up" or MGIB "Booster" program)
If you are an eligible active-duty servicemember the GI Bill "Booster" program can help you obtain up to an extra $150 a month for 36 months added to your standard MGIB educational benefits. This could increase your total benefits by as much as $5,400. Reservists eligible for MGIB-AD benefits may be able to participate while mobilized.
To apply you must have joined the military for the first time after June 30, 1985, be on active duty, file a DD2366-1, and complete all MGIB contributions before you separate. You may elect to voluntarily make additional contributions in $20 increments up to a maximum of $600. Each additional $20 contribution earns you an extra $180 in total benefits.
A servicemember may make the $600 additional contribution while on any period of active duty service (as defined in 38 CFR 21.7020(b)(1)) even though the current period of active service may not be qualifying. Those in the Selected Reserve who are eligible for chapter 30 (MGIB-AD) benefits and who are called to active duty may contribute. The individual must make all contributions while on active duty, but there is no minimum number of days of service required for an individual to make a contribution. [Reservists must either have been called to active duty under section 12301(a), 12301(d), 12301(g), 12302, or 12304 of title 10, U.S. Code, or have been called to active duty under title 32 U.S.C. for a qualifying reason. For more information regarding qualifying reasons under title 32, see part V, paragraphs 1.02a(6) and (7).]
To participate you must execute a DD2366-1, Increased Benefit Contribution Program, at your admin office to start the process. It is often better to file the form even if you are not 100% positive you are eligible.

For every additional $20 contributed your monthly payment increase is equal to $5 for 36 months. ($1 invested = $9 returned) All MGIB contributions must be made while on active duty and are non-refundable. You cannot contribute to this program after you separate from active duty.
Tip: While transitioning off active duty, request that your DD 214 show information about MGIB contributions in the Remarks section, which may list the contribution amount as $1,800 (initial $1,200 pay reduction plus $600 contribution). Also, be sure to submit VA Form 22-1990, Application for Education Benefits, even if you are not ready to begin school. This will reduce the processing time later and it will also highlight most administrative discrepancies while they are still easier to fix.
The Department of Veterans' Affairs will require proof of additional contributions when you apply for your educational benefits. It is very important you maintain copies of all MGIB documents and any Leave and Earning Statement (LES) showing payment of MGIB contributions.
MGIB eligibility is straightforward for most veterans, but it can be complex for others. If you have questions about MGIB eligibility, check with your Education Center, or call the VA toll-free education number, 1-888-GI Bill-1 (1-888-442-4551).
