View Full Version : Deployment
Hi I'm HN Lau, I'm currently a reservist in NOSC San Jose and I'm getting mobilized to Ramadi, I'm just wondering what kind of material should I brush up on prior to deployment, and what should I bring with me? I know I talked to one of the 2nd classes and he told me to just bring a whole lot of duct tape. But besides that, what else should I be packing in my seabag?

Shipmate welcome aboard..
HMC Crone here, used to be with 1/14 in Alameda. I know you will get "Plenty" of answers here. Make sure you check in daily.
When are you mobilizing? your going Marine or what?

We're mobilizing 08FEB08, I'm NEC-8404 but I volunteered for this mobilization and I just found out that it's going to be with the Army :rmad: So I have no idea how this is going to work at all. Only information I know is that we're going to be primarily MP's at the Internment Facility. I really want to see action and get some experience because I'm looking to further my career in the Navy when I get back, being a reservist just isn't as fun as it was when I was on active duty.

Lau,
Are you going as an Individual Augmentee?? If so, check out Navy Knowledge Online and click on the IA section. There's a wealth of information there and possibly a point of contact.
Have fun over here and enjoy the heat :err:
I'm heading back to the states after a 1 year tour in May.....yippy

Be sure to get me your deployment address as soon as you know it - we have lots of people on here who are supporting our deployed corpsman with care packages and letters.
Good Luck and stay safe

HM1 Schmock, I volunteered to mobilize, I don't know what unit or anything, I checked on the IA site and the list of units and all, mine wasn't listed at all. And also, welcome home!
DeeDee, I sure will and appreciate that alot!

I'm also deploying, I fly out to Camp LJ this Sunday. My orders say that I will then go to Lousiana on the 15th. I heard there is training there (Operation Cajun (sp?) Viper) to prep for deployment. I will be with 1st MedBn, Alpha Co. My orders have been changed and modded so much that I really don't know what is going on, LOL. I have the Semper Gumby mentality right now so just role with the punches. I will be with a FRSS, working with the MPs should be fun, get as much training with them as possible and stay safe.

Lau,
Do your orders have an "NE" or Noble Eagle number. It's usually a 4 digit number followed by an addition 4 digits. I realize that NKO doesn't list all of them on there, but you should be able to email ECRC with your number and they can point you in the right direction, as long as it is an Individual Augmentee billet, which it sounds like it is.

Tact Medic - Hey man, sounds like you'll be having some fun. I certainly wished that when I came over here, that I'd be with the Marines, but things don't always work that way. Is this your first time coming over here?? Shoot me an email if you have any questions. Good Luck, Stay Safe and most importantly, take care of those Marines!!
REMEMBER - IF YOU ARE DEPLOYING - GET YOUR ADDRESS TO ME ASAP as we have LOTS of members who want to support our deployed docs of all services.
Email your deployment address to me at DeeDee@corpsman.com include your email address too so people can email you also :)
Good Luck and Stay Safe
HUGS to you all

I emailed ECRC about it and this is what they sent back to me:
MP GUARD COMPANY CONDUCTS DETAINEE OPERATIONS AT A THEATER INTERNMENT FACILITY (TIF) IOT SECURE AND SAFEGUARD DETAINED ENEMY COMBATANTS.
Is that all the information I get? I'm guessing all the addresses and information come later on, on top of that, we(I?) are/am getting security clearance, maybe that's why they're not too clear on it? First time getting mobilized, so I'm just guessing how all this stuff works.

Lau,
Sorry for the delay in getting back to you, been out hitting the streets up north in Iraq...300 miles in 3 days.....I'm ready for some sleep now!
You should feel lucky:) I didn't have a clue what I was doing until I got to my training site. You should be getting a lot more information once you get to your NMPS site. And if not there, then, like me, you'll get it at your training site. Just be sure to complete the ECRC checklists before you head out to your NMPS site and if you can, be sure that all of your immunizations and other health matters are taken care of before you leave (and be sure that they document!!!!!)
As far as uniforms and such, you will get all of your uniform items at NMPS, so I would not worry about buying anything. If there's something more specific that you need, you always have the NEX on base to get those last minute items.
As always, if you have any more questions, please let me know. I'll be heading out on R&R leave next week, so please ask before then.
Take care,
HM1(FMF) Schmock

Wow, 300 miles, thats alot of road to cover on foot. Hoorah!
Besides that, I was talking to a HM2 and he told me to try to bring a little bit of my own medical gear. Something like this:
http://www.diamondbacktactical.com/Cutaway-Platform-Medium-Medical-Pouch-Combo-Patent-Pending-P1375C110.aspx
I don't know how necessary that would be in a prison environment vs outside in the field, any advice would be great :) and stay safe.

I wish that I could walk 300 miles in one day. No it was on a convoy mission, riding around in a HMMWV.
I wouldn't worry too much about buying your own medical gear. I can get pricey and you should be getting a BlackHawk bag from the Army as part of your gear issue.
CrazyCorpsman is right - don't worry about buying your own medical gear - you should be set up by the Army when you get your gear from them.

HN Lau,
I was in Ramadi in 06. I took my advancement exam in the Fac you will be working in.
You will primarily be doing intake physicals on detainees, and providing them with health care while they enjoy thier stay on lovley Camp Ramadi getting $6.00 a day 3 hots and a cot and getting the prayer mats out a few times a day. They will work you for feel good meds constantly and tell you how much they love America and apple pie.
If you get outside the wire it will be to transfer detainees up to Abu Grheb and places like that. When I was there with 3rd CAG there was alot of trauma rolling through Charlie Med which is right across the street from where you will be billeted. When ever casualties came in it didn't matter what unit you were with all the Docs showed up and helped out where ever needed.
Don't buy anything special, especially medical gear its all there already, and the Army will give you a bunch of cool stuff. Good luck.

Insist on a good helmet and ensure it fits properly!
If ya got a $5 head, get a $5 helmet....

Pull out MARADMIN 480/06 or NAVADMIN 089/07 and coordinate upgrades as appropriate. Make a stink if they are trying to send your men with anything less. Do not deploy with a web suspension PASGT helmet & 2-point chinstrap even if that means you need to purchase the upgrade kit yourself.
I know a helmet is not 'medical gear', but protective gear helps to keep you from needing to use medical gear...

I was attached to 1/12 MP and we were responsible for the detainee centers in Ramadi, Al Asad and Falllujah. If you are part of the detention center then you will be in the BAS. The Marines or Soldiers now if the Army has it are also responsible for transporting them to IP stations so you will be able to go on some Convoy's.
You will be responsible for the health of all the detainees. They receive physicals upon arrival and are checked daily. Some are older and have some health issues while others are faking. You have to be politcally correct at all times and pass no judgement on these detainees.
If you need anymore info let me know.

I know when I went over the first time in 2003 we found the company Oregon Aero who I believe started the helmet pad upgrades. I can tell from personal experience that these things are worth there weight in gold. I have personally seen it save someones life under live fire. the best $110 bux I ever spent......
