I may be wrong, however, last I heard you cannot obtain a 'C' school right out of 'A' school.

This list may not be all inclusive, but lists advanced jobs that Hospital Corpsman can apply for:

Well the way it was when I went through corps school just last year was if you cut above an 85 average you could request one of the C schools that were available. Physical therapy right out of A school? Probably not. His options will probably be surgical tech, pharmacy, lab, or maybe phsyc tech.

Is the process A school then FMF training then C school if openings and qualify?

DeeDee

if i remember correctly it is "A" , "C" then FMTB (if the opening exists) then assignment to your unit

I have one in A school now and he was told they all are going to FMF school after A school.

yeah if he keeps things up he will definately have above an 85 percent, and he was told that the only way they will go FMF now is if it was in their original contract, but I have heard a couple of different things about that so i dont know, thanks for all the info though!

All male Sailors who hold the NEC of Corpsman will be attending Field Medical Training Battalion, FMTB. This will give them the necessary training to go Fleet Marine Force, FMF but it does not guarantee that they will.

It is my opinion that it is highly probable they will eventually go FMF.

krash87
01-30-2008, 12:35
That's not always true, out of a class of about 45 we only had 5 people go to FMTB.

KRASH,
I just spoke to someone there.. It all depends on the FY and where you fall in the year. Right now again.. All males are going.. Plain and simple.. Things change.. If you read what was put out by Citrus here:

http://www.corpsman.com/forum/showthread.php?t=19355

He "IS" at school now..

99.9 percent of Males are going to FMTB now.

But I would bet your last dollar.(Never bet mine) that in Aug, Sept time frame not so many will go then either.. Just depends on when you fall in the year..

They were doing Day and Night classes as well up till last week, bet they weren't doing that when you were there either.. .. But they started..

See Things change.

I understand that Chief, I'm just saying that what people hear isn't always true. It's just like you said, where are they in the FY, needs of the navy, and seats available. When I left for RTC they were saying the same thing, "all males are going," and they said the same thing all through corps school. But when orders came up, not many seats available. Also, just because the people in the class ahead of you had everyone go, doesn't mean it will happen to your class too.

I'm just saying that what people hear isn't always true.

Exactly Krash;

That is why we try to dispel misinformation here, with a staff of veterans and active duty personnel who have many years of combined military experience! The gouge we put out here is true and valid as of that moment!

Nothing in the military is cast in concrete. Things change and are constantly evolving! Just because your class went one way does not mean others will be the same. We are at war, and the majority of Corpsman have and are going to be with the FMF Marines. Regardless of a 'C' school! This is purely because this war is more in likely going to escalate. Maybe not immediately, but it will. History has a nasty habit of repeating itself.

Of course, there are always special circumstances.

yah FMTB depends on how busy the school is because of the summer "rush" when I graduated in November nobody was going to FMTB, now everybody is. I got orders to AVT school and now i'm going to FMTB after AVT school and then on to Hawaii with the 1st MAW

Back when I graduated A School in February 1977 (OMG, do I feel old), all males went to FMTB (Field Med School back then). But of course, that was on the tail end of Vietnam and the military was of a mindset that all corpsmen needed to go through it.

01-31-2008, 20:23
Doc Stevens,
You are right that use to be the mentality. Though currently most Chief's and above currently not serving with the FMF have had thier 8404 NEC pulled. They are working on revamping the 8404 NEC to get better numbers of personnel with the NEC serving in that capacity. They are looking to better prepare the Chief community with the skills they need as Battalion/Squadron Chief's within the FMF and probably have something taylored for the HM1's as well. Though, these are just plans in the works right now.

I've read on another site that A school is 14 wks. My son just classed up today (thurday). And has a graduation date May 2nd. Thats a little less then 14 wks. And I've read on here that they PT. They haven't PT'd since boot camp. Can someone give me some info on all of this ? I know the Navy owns him for at least the next 5 yrs. But I'm a mom and I just want to keep myself informed on what he'll be going through.

One thing I have learned as a parent of a Corpsman and being former military myself, is that nothing is 'concrete' with the military. Change is constant.

The owner of this site (Da-Chief) is a former Chief instructor of the Naval Hospital Corps school located in Great Lakes, Illinois and is more qualified to answer this for you.

However, in the mean time, I'll attempt to share some information based on what little I do know.

"The curriculum has varied in length and composition over the years. Currently, the course is fourteen weeks in length and includes medical fundamentals, emergency medical procedures, nursing procedures, general military training and health promotion topics. Additionally, students have two weeks practical experience in "hands on" nursing care before graduation."

I know the Navy recognizes that physical fitness is a readiness issue best addressed by creating a culture that promotes healthy lifestyles and provides sailors the leadership, tools, and time to achieve and maintain fitness goals.

The Navy emphasizes that physical readiness is both a leadership and an individual
responsibility.

However there will be times, due to unforeseen circumstances/schedules, that a school or command may or may not exercise collectively. It then becomes an individual responsibility for which they are tested, I believe, twice a year, (Physical Readiness Test, PRT). The Navy encourages it's members to exercise three times per week.

I hope this answers some of your questions and as always, I invite others more knowledgeable to chime in with any corrections or additional information.

As for his graduation date being earlier than 14 weeks... I'm guessing he told you the graduation date on his orders... the graduation date on my orders was Jan 18th but I'm not graduating till Feb 8th, the curriculum is roughly 14 weeks long... and yes, it does keep changing. Its changed twice since i've been here, and I havn't even graduated yet. From what I understand the new curriculum is 10 weeks to take 13 tests, then 2 weeks of labs and 2 weeks of clincals. =~ 14 weeks.

Only 25 students per class! So, there is only ONE school for Pharmacy Technician?

That isn't true about 25 per class; we started with 34 and graduated with 26.

What would be a great idea, is for you to do a write up about Pharmacy school, what you experienced, information about what it was like, what future students can expect etc... for our corpsman.com newsletter.

I'm sure everyone would like to hear about it, I know I would. Should you decide to proceed, send the completed write up to DeeDee at editor@corpsman.com

Plus you can add any photos to the document to make it more interesting.
