ARLINGTON, TX -- A local soldier serving in Iraq died Monday from injuries received from an improvised explosive device.
Spc. Christopher J. West, 26, of Arlington, was wounded Sunday while walking during a combat mission in Muqdadiyah, Iraq. West was taken to the U.S. Army hospital at Balad, Iraq, where he died.
Spc. West was a combat medic, and was scheduled for rest and relaxation at his family's home in Arlington this weekend, according to his sister, Lauren West, 27.
"It was going to be his last mission before he came home," she said. "He loved what he was doing. He said he felt like he had found his calling. He thought that it was very possible that he could make the Army a lifelong career."
Spc. West arrived in Iraq four months ago and was assigned to the 1st Squadron, 73rd Cavalry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division from Fort Bragg, N.C.
Spc. West was fourth-generation Army, his family said. His father, John West, served in Vietnam as a Ranger and Green Beret. Spc. West was 4 years old when he made the decision to join the Army, Lauren West said.
Spc. West grew up in Arlington and attended Sam Houston High School before graduating from Bowie High School in 2000. He graduated with honors in 2004 from Texas A&M University with a bachelor's degree in marketing, said Hattie West, his mother.
"He graduated from jump school at Fort Benning August 17, 2007," she said. "This was his first year in."
Army testing revealed Spc. West's aptitudes for the Signal Corps and for medical training, Lauren West said.
"After he graduated from A&M, he wanted to go in- to law, but something kept pulling him toward the Army," Lauren West said. "He felt like he had to do it."
Spc. West's girlfriend also is deployed in Iraq, his sister said. Family members said Tuesday that they were trying to get in touch with her to make sure that she was aware of his death.
Funeral arrangements were pending.

It truly saddens me to hear yet of another fallen medic/corpsman and the ultimate sacrifice they have paid. The price for freedom and the defense of the Constitution of these United States is costly and must never be forgotten.

Arlington, Texas is the city just to my west and is only five minutes from where I live. He attended the same High School as my HM3 son. I don't know if they knew each other yet, he may have been in a class or two ahead of him.

The Patriot Guard is currently attempting to make contact with the family, in order to offer our services. If approved, know that the Patriot Guard will be in attendance, standing tall and silent as we render the honors he so richly deserves.

Thank you Specialist West, for your service, dedication and your sacrifice. We at corpsman.com send our collective condolences to your family, friends and loved ones.

The following was just released from the Patriot Guard Riders website:

This is a confirmed Arlington National Cemetery PGR mission! (No other missions planned)

The family of SPC Christopher J. West has graciously invited the PGR to participate in the final mission of their Hero son. Christopher is to be buried in the hallowed grounds for Arlington National Cemetery (ANC) - as befits an American Hero who gave his all for his grateful country. Burial at ANC will be on Wednesday, 20 February, 2008 at approximately 1300 hours. It will be preceded by a family-only viewing on 19 February, and a Memorial Service at Murphy's Funeral Home in Arlington, VA on 20 February, prior to a procession to ANC for final services.

PGR will mount an Honor Flag Line for both the family-only viewing and the Memorial Services, will provide a mounted escort for the last journey of the Hero from the funeral home to ANC, and will proudly Stand in Honor at the graveside service.

Additional condolences may be viewed at:

Ride safe and let the family know we care (PGR, corpsman.com etc). I hope this one doesn't affect you too emotionally, being so close to home. If it does, you know where I can be found.

Hey Puck;

Thanks bro, the family decided to hold the funeral at Arlington National Cemetery and not in Texas. PGR from that area represented us and a Texas flag was brought in as well.

This hero was a few grades higher than my son's class and he did not know him. Nevertheless, we stand tall, silent and with respect for this hero, their family and loved ones.

We will add Spc West our prayer intentions this Easter. There are so many heros out there today that we never hear about until it is to late. God Bless Spc West and all those he touched in his life and mission. May all Americans celebrate his courage and bravado and may his family find God's peace in knowing how missed he will be by his comrades in arms.
