National Military Family Association (NMFA) Operation Purple

free summer camp programs for military kids with parent(s) deployed or injured. The goal of these free summer camps is to bring together youth who are experiencing some stage of a deployment and the stress that goes along with it. Operation Purple camps give kids the coping skills and support networks of peers to better handle life’s ups and downs.

Any military child can apply; however, priority is given to those children who have a parent/guardian or family household member deployed between May 2007 and September 2009. If all spaces are not filled with campers who meet the deployment criteria, the remaining camp slots are filled with any military child from any service branch, the National Guard, Reserve, PHS and NOAA. “Deployment” is defined loosely as they recognize TDY and travel can often take service members away from family for significant periods of time.

They also offer a camp that provides additional help for kids who are going through a potentially difficult adjustment—an injury to a parent. This specialized, dedicated camp incorporates additional mental health support into the daily camp activities—without losing the focus on fun.
