Krash, way to go, you beat me to the punch. Good luck Indolence, we'll be thinking of you.

Nick: You get the standard, ugly, never want to be seen wearing them in front of girls, type of glasses. They are dark blue or black in color. Yeah, the ones with the LARGE frame....

Once you graduate RTC, you are free to purchase a pair of glasses with a more stylish frame. I feel for ya, because I wear them myself. Or you can get contact lenses on your dime.

krash87
02-28-2008, 19:04
The glasses are actually a crap color brown now, I still have mine. :) But don't waste your money at a civilian eyeglass shop, go to the Navy clinic with your prescription from boot camp and they can give you more decent looking ones.

So should I bring the writing materials such as paper and envelopes or simply buy them there?

8404
02-28-2008, 20:08
You'll have a chance to purchase them there at RTC.

Did your recruiters tell you to open a checking account prior to leaving for RTC?
If so, ensure that you have the routing and checking account number with you and
don't lose it. The Navy will use that to electronically deposit your paychecks.

Take your debit card with you.

we called the glasses "birth control glasses" because no one of the opposite sex would want to get within 10 feet of you wearing those ugly a** things ROFL

I still have mine in a box somewhere around here - just for laffs :D

dont waste your money on buying writing stuff for home, they give you EVERYTHING just buy the stamps they give you the paper and envelopes to use. if you bring anything it will just clutter up your A+B drawer.

They allow all boots to carry time pieces at RTC now?

Only the RCPO and Recruit Yeoman were allowed to wear watches back in the day...

krash87
03-12-2008, 07:43
Depends on the RDC's now Chief, but in most divisions only the RCPO, yeoman, and the watchbill coordinator wore one.

Blasphemy. Yes they are BCG's but BCG stands for bitch catchin goggles, because every chica in great lakes knows that if you're wearing those damn things you just graduated boot camp and have about $1300 + in your bank : P Don't let the looks fool you. If you do have your own glasses or contacts you will be allowed to retain them during boot camp, just not able to wear them. You can wear them for graduation, though. Just keep them in a safe place :P And just so you know... you can fit stuff behind your drawer and under it, too. Its a good place to stick letters and other stuff. Those annoying notebooks they make you keep fit under there, and the extra deoderant and belts they issue you fit behind the drawer. You'll see when you get there.

Just buy the writing materials at RTC, its easier. Also, if you don't have a bank account already, you can set one up while you're @ RTC with Navy Fed Credit Union or Armed Forces Bank.

And be prepared to see some amazing high-school drama after taps. Its hilarious, really, it is. Someone will eventaully scream STFU GUYS then everyone will yell back at em, and then they'll keep bitchin :D Fun stuff.

Dan didn't take anything with him except his ATM card, a short (very short) list of addresses so he could write, His SS Card, Bank Info (for setting up Direct Deposit) and his Driver's License and the clothes he was wearing for the trip down to RTC. We had bought him a couple magazines to read on the trip down - those were in the box of clothes he sent back - Gotta LOVE it when your kid sends you DIRTY laundry in the mail. HA HA

Orthopedic Inserts:

NB5, have you read the RTC website? Check here: http://www.nstc.navy.mil/rtcgl/recruits/bring.html

And also here for lots more information, also give the following website to your parents and/or spouse so they can read all about boot camp, (RTC).

Sorry!

Reason: If your feet require some form of orthopedic inserts for your shoes. That's indicative of a problem!

As an 8404 FMF Corpsman, your feet are the single most important piece of equipment you own! If you're having problems and require those inserts, just wait until you get to FMTB when you go on 8 and 10 mile hikes with full back packs weighing at around 80 pounds.

Are these "inserts" over the counter like Dr. Scholls or are they Doctor prescribed and prescribed for a problem? If you have a problem and require these, you had better speak up prior to shipping to RTC.

I don't believe they will be allowed. However, here is an excerpt from the RTC site you said you visited:

"If you still have any questions about recruit training, the base, or graduation events please feel free to contact us at rtc.pao@navy.mil (rtc.pao@navy.mil). Welcome Aboard!"
Send them an email and ask if they are allowed or not, I could be wrong. Things do change.

Nope no problem here i was just told i had flat feet back in highschool (4sports athlete). they are asymptomatic so i have never had a problem with them. i duck walked no problem etc.... the ole doc said get these so that i wouldnt have to run into a problem later on down the road so i figured why not insurance covered them. i run and hike and box a lot through out the week and also i am on my feet a majority of the day for work. i was just wondering i have become accustom to wearing them....and like my doc said i dont want to run into a problem down the road....

According to Doc_Fuson (http://www.corpsman.com/forum/member.php?u=456)'s post above, they are allowed. I guess times certainly have changed. I would still double check to make sure. Also, ask if a doctor's prescription or note is required.

Secondly, these orthopedic inserts, are they the kind that have to be replaced periodically? If so, make sure you have a fairly new pair. You want to keep up on their replacement to ensure you are reaping the full benefits from them.

Flat feet, back in my day, would have been a "no go" to boot camp or entering military service.

Best of luck to you.

I understand the ole days..........but like i said my feet are asymptomatic not symptomatic......some have problems some do i just got lucky and dont i suppose....these are good for 5 years.

When I reinjured my knee in boot camp the first thing they did was check my boots and my feet. I was instantly given a blue pair of inserts for my boots. Not quite doc scholls standards here but they felt great. Also the first time I ever learned that I had low arches/flat feet.

You should be ok when they are getting you to throw everything back in a box to ship home. Dont bring too much attention to it. Its the next day you get boots anyways so insert them right away and you will be good to go. That or put them in your sneakers. In case you do have to send them back complain once about your knees and you will go see them anyways and they will give them to you again.

I believe the only time you get "issued" clothing or shoes is at RTC. You would need to bring what was issued or what you have purchased as replacements utilizing the Navy "clothing allowance" possibly coupled with your own money!

NB52USN (http://www.corpsman.com/forum/member.php?u=1307)

Sufficient information has been provided you in order to fully understand of "what to bring" to RTC. I even provided you with a direct email contact for the Public Affairs Officer of RTC. Not to mention that you have a Recruiter who can answer your incidental questions.

Let me break it down to you Barney style:

You should only bring with you what the RTC website states you can bring. Link also provided.

At some point, upon your arrival at RTC, you will be asked to strip naked and everything you have with you will be packed up in a nice box and shipped home. The Navy will issue you everything you need for your recruit training. You may wear whatever type of shoes, running or otherwise, on your trip to RTC. However, they will be shipped home.

NB52USN (http://www.corpsman.com/forum/member.php?u=1307), you have to understand, you will not be allowed to run around RTC looking like an "individual" with a $300.00 pair of whoever's on. The military is all about a "uniform" appearance. You are a member of team! Everybody will look the same! Everybody will be wearing the same uniform!

do they give u new sneakers or can u bring ur own?

100% no. You are given shoes after they do a foot test to see what level your arches are at. I promise you ANY foot gear you bring will be shipped home.

Easy 8404. I did ask my recruiter and I did send an email to that address. The exact words in response to my email were "Unfortunately,I have no answer for your questions, you will have to wait to report to RTC for answers." That is why i ask on here.

Lol, yeah, when I was leaving to go to MEPS, the recruiter was driving. He stopped off at the local Juvenile Hall and the County Jail, to pick up more recruits who were going to boot camp with me.

LMAO, I'm not surprised Ben!

It was not a urban myth, but reality that people were given the "jail" or the "military" - usually Army or Marine Corps - option.

Doc_Stevens - i know what you mean - i smoked in High School (why? dumb teenager) then i stopped before i went to boot - started again there because it meant getting out of formations LOL (STUPID!!!) - stopped again while at Tech School and haven't touched one since - thank goodness, what a hard habit to break.
