hello everyone, my name is rich. I am elnlisting in the navy this following fall and I have a few questions. I was originally going into the USAF but had a change of heart and wanted to do something more meaningful to me personally than sit behind a computer. IE, corpsman. It was the first job I saw that grabbed my eye and coming from a medical family, something I know to be very rewarding and challenging. so please if any of you have answers to my questions they would be greatly appreciated.

1. how often are u with marines as a corpsman?
2. Will I be stationed with a marine unit right out of school?
3. How fast do you move up as a corpsman?
4. If anyone has any real life stories they would share with me to help me get a idea of what the life of a corpsman is like that would be great, senior or junior.
5. if you are not with marines, where are you?
6. after basic, where do you go as a corpsman?
7. wherever i go, will i be able to leave base/camp?

thank you, im sorry it is so much but i want to make an informed decision.
god bless, Rich

The USAF has field jobs too. Take a look at JTAC and PJ.

I recommend you browse the site and read more the postings. You will likely find answers to many of your questions.

1. Some HM's = 0%, others = 100% with the Marines

2. Maybe. Are you going to request it in your contract? Will the "needs of the Navy" direct you to report to the Marines right out of school?

3. How good are you and what is the Navy's current HM quotas and CREO? This cycle HM3 should be pretty easy for qualified Doc's, but HM2 will be much tougher. But that is no indication of how things will be when you get to that level.

4. It's not just a job, it's an adventure.....

5. With the Navy? With the Army? At a joint command? Working in the Capital or in the White House?

6. NHCS-GL (Naval Hospital Corps School, Great Lakes)

7. Not when you're on an ocean cruise....

I enlisted in August 1976 (right after Vietnam) and 98% of all males in my HM-A School went to FMSS) right after A School2. Will I be stationed with a marine unit right out of school?
Needs of the Navy (I went straight to a Marine Air Wing after FMSS)3. How fast do you move up as a corpsman?
Depends on your ambition, some moved quickly, while others just "put in their time.4. If anyone has any real life stories they would share with me to help me get a idea of what the life of a corpsman is like that would be great, senior or junior.
Too many stories to tell in this short space. Most of all my experiences were memorable to say the least. I had many positive things I experienced as an HM.5. if you are not with marines, where are you?
Sheesh, I have been in out-patient clinics mostly, but never really assigned to a large hospital.6. after basic, where do you go as a corpsman?
Great Lakes for me baby (November 76 through February 77 - a tough winter.7. wherever i go, will i be able to leave base/camp?
I encourage you to get out and see as much as possible. I never traveled until I entered the military. See the tourist sites, but also get off the beaten path and enjoy exploration. I learned so much about other cultures and daily living by getting out and exploring.
It's all what you make of it.
