The Navy recognizes that physical fitness is a readiness issue best addressed by creating a culture that promotes healthy lifestyles and provides sailors the leadership, tools, and time to achieve and maintain fitness goals.

The Navy emphasizes that physical readiness is both a leadership and an individual responsibility.

However there will be times, due to unforeseen circumstances/schedules, that a school or command may or may not exercise collectively. It then becomes an individual responsibility for which they are tested, I believe, twice a year, (Physical Readiness Test, PRT). The Navy encourages it's members to exercise three times per week.

Basically, It all boils down to who your instructors are. Some are more gun ho than others... I remember doing PT as a class at least 3 times a week, with a lot of flutter kicks, my body hurts just thinking about it. HAHA... We would also do 1.5 mile run as a class, or command. But I think their odometers are broken, or they don't know how to count.... I remember thinking basic was a walk in a park compared to this. But, everyone I'm sure has their own opinion. Whatever the case is, the PT is pretty demanding but it's like anything else, if you prepare yourself you will do just fine.

p.s. they like to do everything at the marine standard, with an exception of a few instructors...

4 count; jumping jacks, push ups, flutter kicks, ect mainly focus on core training...

Don't wait for the instructors, if you find the NHCS command does not PT as much you'd like.

Remember, it's not an opinion:

The Navy emphasizes that physical readiness is both a leadership and an individual responsibility.

Now, FMTB is another story, lol

"The next exercise will be the flutter kick...we will do ALL of them"

See how easy that was!

That's what I love about the military, all you have to do is ask, and your Petty Officers will ensure you receive all that you have asked for and beyond! Because they care about you, they certainly wouldn't want anyone to go without!

"The calisthenics (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Calisthenics) version of the flutter kick is often used as an intensive tool in the military (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Armed_forces). They help to develop the hip-flexors, abdominal muscles, and legs. Flutter kicks are a four count exercise. Starting position is lying flat on the back with the feet and head approximately 6 inches off the ground. Hands are under the buttocks, fists are clenched to support the lower back. Count one; raise the left leg to a 45-degree angle, keeping the right leg stationary. Count two; raise the right leg off the ground to a 45 degree angle while, at the same time, moving the left leg to the starting position. Counts three and four are repetitions of the same movements. Legs must be locked, with toes pointing away from the body."

you'll also learn what a side-strattle hop is while your at NHCS. I can't remember his name, but I remember an HM2 up there that could do about 10,000 of them without falling out.
