Perth Amboy, NJ is looking (http://www.thnt.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080322/OPINION01/803220400/1079) to put itself on the map as one of the nation's first digital wireless municipalities . The city is planning to connect all of its residents to broadband by creating a digital wireless network similar to that used for cell phone or WLAN connectivity. Essentially, a series of digital connections would be set up throughout the city to create a wireless canopy over Perth Amboy.
The system is planned to roll out in three phases. Municipal buildings and schools will be connected first. Businesses will get access in the second stage and the final stage will be to connect all of the city s residents to the canopy. There is no expected date for when this project might be complete. The project is expected to cost nearly $400,000 but money in excess of that amount has been pledged by a local business in order to prevent tax payers from footing the bill.
