As the word recession starts spreading through the headlines, analysts have started predicting (http://www.247wallst.com/2008/03/big-mergers-f-1.html) which businesses are going to go belly-up in the near future. On a recent list of ten companies that were likely to be bought (and who would be likely to buy them) there were three tech companies predicted to be cut. Two of the companies (Qwest and AMD) have been making similar lists all year.
The recent predictions suggest that chip-maker AMD will be able to hang in the market if it engages in a merger (most likely with Nvidia) since it s in a position to do well if it can just get a grasp on its debt problem. Qwest, on the other hand, is predicted to be on its way out of the market with Verizon cited as the most likely buyer of the company. Likewise, in the cable sector, Charter Communications is believed to be ready for a buyout. Of course, its most likely buyer (Comcast) is barred from the purchase due to ownership caps (http://www.dslreports.com/shownews/92266) currently in place.
