The Charter broadband price for life auction is over, and the "winner" has paid $71,540 (http://connect.charter.com/forlife/) for at least a couple years of broadband service. Paying $50 a month for the next fifty years would only cost you $30,000, so that's quite a bargain indeed. Especially considering the fine print lets Charter sell the company in three years (http://connect.charter.com/forlife/contestRules.htm) without paying the winner a dime. Charter this week announced (http://www.corpsman.com/shownews/Charters-Broadband-For-Life-Auction-Tops-40k-92966) that the proceeds from the auction would be going to Habitat For Humanity, but most participants didn't know that -- the company didn't mention anything about a charity until the auction started getting public attention (500,000 views) for its high bid totals and was nearly over.
