Not sure how familiar anybody is with the Border Patrol; but there are some great opportunities for Corpsman within this organization. I say all of this because I, myself, have started the application process.
Most people I know classify the Border Patrol as "law enforcement" only; but there are two branches within that I think Corpsman (whom are getting out and want to apply their abilities and experience) should strongly consider. BORSTAR and BORTAC. BORSTAR (Border Patrol Search Trauma and Rescue) is a 5 week course after completion of basic field training (20 wks) that will utilize all of the training we have aquired as Corpsman. They are, obviously, a specialized team that fall under "Border Patrol Special Operations". BORTAC (Border Patrol Tactical) is pretty much the same as the FBI SRT, or, the U.S. Marchals Service SOG. BP agents are not allowed to even consider the pipe line for this until after 3 years of service as a field agent; BUT, it's a 4 - 5 week course much akin to BUD/S. If you're wondering, yes, they DO have team medics.
Here's the cool stuff: As we all know, most Corpsman leave the service without any civilian certifications other than BLS. Well....you don't have to have any special certs for either one of these positions. Of course it's looked highly upon to enter BORSTAR aleady an EMT with BLS and PHTLS.....but if you don't have it, they will send you to get it. ALSO, you can ENTER the BP as a GS-5, maybe even a GS-7 if you qualify. Couple that with advancement to either GS-7, or GS-9 respectively, within one year......and I tell ya what, that ain't bad at all.
There is an enormouse amount of information out there for those interested. One of the websites that has aided me much more than others is: honorfirst.com This site is ran by a Senior BP agent, is unofficial, and has links to just about everything you can think of regarding the above mention info. If anybody has questions, please let me know.....I'll answer what I can, and if I can't, I'll point you in the right direction. I just wanted to put this info out there for all of you, I'm beginning to learn how difficult a decision it is to leave the service.....and if I can help make it easier on others, than I'm all about it.
