View Full Version : Checking in on thursday....
....what should I expect when I get there for that day and the weekend and can I find a list of what I should be brining? I was also wondering what the Liberty policy was at the school? I've been on phase 3 since last August out in San Diego(my last command said they would fax a letter stating this) is there a chance to have it again fast then the normal time. Thanks.

First off, do you have a warfare device? if so, you will get phase 2 immediately. Unfortunately the previous command doesn't have any bearing on the policy here, so most likely you will start on 1 or 2. Bring a full seabag and a FEW comfort items, as remember, you will have to ship them home at some point. Do not bring family. as far as time in phase liberty, you will have to do your time, generally 2 weeks each pahse, if there is no reason to phase you down (test failures, EMI, discipline issues, etc.) The full liberty policy will be one of the first things explaned to you upon check-in.

As in all military schools you should bring your "full" seabag, coupled with your orders to Hospital Corpsman school.
You are allowed a laptap computer and some small type of music player. (be considerate of your shipmates and keep volume low or use head phones)! Space is very limited, so be cautious as to the size of stuff you are bringing.
As is anywhere you go, there are always occurrences of stuff getting misplaced or growing legs and walking off. For laptops and other expensive stuff, you may want to look into obtaining insurance. You may also want to look into some sort of GPS tracking thingy for the laptop.
The following is an excerpt from the NHCS website. You can contact the quarterdeck there for additional information:
Congratulations on your orders to Naval Hospital Corps School. We look forward to meeting you and are committed to doing our best to make your transition to the Great Lakes/Chicago area a pleasant one.
I am sure that you are excited about your upcoming move and must have many questions and concerns about the command and the area. The links provided on this page are a great source of additional information on resources provided by the base. Your Command Sponsor will be able to answer any specific questions or further explain other items of concern to you.
If you have orders and would like to contact your sponsor, email the Command Sponsorship Program Coordinator.

I doubt you will get Phase III liberty on your first day at school! What can you expect on your first day or weekend, probably the duty or watch! Maintain your military bearing, get a hair cut and wear the proper uniform for reporting in.
I didn't expect to get phase III straight away, so of the guys I was with in San Diego have been granted it after a week or two after taking care of all the watch quals and stuff like that.
As for the check in uniform, we are in white now correct?

Do fleet returnees stand POOW and MOOW watches? I guess they could, but I don't see the point.

Fleet returnees do stand watches.

Wow, thats weird. Any reason? I thought that those watches were to prepare booters for watches in the fleet.

You are a member of a Team, there is no "I" in team. Do you not stand watches within the fleet, on a ship, with the Marines? Everyone stands watches in the military! You'll also be part of work details such as cleaning of the 'head'. You could also be placed in a student ALPO or LPO status, whereby you then become responsible to see the work is done satisfactorily.
Welcome to the Navy, shipmate. You're going "back to school".

When I went to A-school, fleet returnees didn't stand quarterdeck watch. The logic behind it was that the watches were a training tool to train booters in how to stand watch out in the fleet.

That is entirely true. So follow that logic and you can see why we need to do it here.

Well, it's not like the Fleet Returnees get the hard watches...

I am scared of no watch only because I am currently on a 24 hour watch with these kids...

During school nights (0000-0800) students will only stand 2hr watches, on weekends or non-school nights they will stand four hr watches. This helps with study and sleep.

Makes a lot of sense.
OK when you say full sea bag upon check in.. I have four... all of my standard issued uniforms from boot plus jackets etc..8 years worth of uniform items.. then I have all my flight gear as well.. flight suits ... jackets and cold weather gear for that as well.. my den closet is for all my military uniforms that's what I am thinking when you say full seabag.. not to mention with the new uniforms out in some regions are we going to have to purchase them upon arrival? Not sure when available in south east region... (currently deployed so no new info on dates) would love some insight into this.. the other problem I have is my flight vest (ordinance removed) and Sar gear (ordinance removed as well) and records that I need to maintain and "travel with me"
Shawn;
Full Sea Bag issue for 'A' schools means what you received at RTC. Hopefully others from Corpsman 'A' school will chime in with respect to the new uniform issues and approximated 'wear' dates.
Space is limited at Corpsman 'A' school, it may be advisable to secure off base storage of your additional sea bags and SAR related equipment.
Thank you for the heads up I will have to make sure the extra's are packed up and ready for the movers so my wife doesn't have to worry about it when I finish my 2nd C school.. I have 6 months worth of schooling.. HM A School, AVT School, Medic School.. then I have to figure out where I am going to be stationed.. get a house, all of our (wife and I) household goods shipped out.. I have to call the detailer and ask about orders as well..was given class start date of 13 may but waiting on paper orders.. this is not easy floating around..lol.. thank you for the help and look forward to info on new uniform availability and wear dates..

My advice is if you don't want it taken durning a health and comfort, and if you don't NEED it, don't bring it. Space is VERY limited and I can say with 100% certainty, you will not need flight suits or SAR gear.
