It s one step-forward, one-step back when it comes to wireless communication on U.S. airplanes. In-flight broadband is taking off but there has been strong opposition to allowing VoIP services which would bring voice conversations to your seatback table. Now a new bill (http://www.rcrnews.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080416/FREE/583821480/1005) has been proposed in the House which would turn talk down further by banning all cell phone use on flights. The representatives proposing the bill (called the HANG UP act) say that the current ban in place could easily be lifted as a result of the new in-flight Internet technology and they want to make sure that doesn t happen. Their belief is that flight passengers don t want to have to listen to others take calls on the plane. Meanwhile, Europe is moving forward with letting passengers talk on their airlines so if you want to get chatty in air then international travel might be an option to consider.
