A group of television broadcasters who have formed a group called the Open Mobile Video Coalition (OMVC) are pushing (http://www.rcrnews.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080419/SUB/471433604/1019) to create a standard for the development and distribution of mobile television. They have been completing six-month trials in Las Vegas and San Francisco to determine which of three different technologies should be adopted by the Advanced Television Systems Committee later this year. Their hope is to be able to combine live streaming television, video-on-demand and interactive content with a focus on free ad-supported services for the mobile TV user.

It is their belief that they can pose a significant threat to current mobile TV leader MediaFLO (http://www.dslreports.com/shownews/93088) because of the fact that they have the existing infrastructure to keep costs down when moving television to the mobile platform. Moreover, they point out that they have content ownership that AT&T and Qualcomm don t have which is a major factor for consumers seeking to watch mobile TV. Consumer trials are set to begin after the OMVC files the report on its testing next month. They want to move quickly because they say that there's a potential $2 billion annual revenue increase if they can deliver these services to the market.
