MetroFi is a municipal wireless network provider that has failed to meet many of its commitments to the cities that it has worked with. Despite once claiming (http://www.dslreports.com/shownews/87396) that the reason that their networks work is because they are ad-supported, they have demanded money (http://www.dslreports.com/shownews/85757) during the process of building out their networks. This caused delays in development of networks in Alaska, Ohio and California where cities all expressed surprise that MetroFi wanted money after initial agreements indicated that the city would not have to pay for the networks.

Portland is the latest victim (http://www.muniwireless.com/2008/04/18/portland-oregon-wifi-network-stalled/) of this confusion. The municipal network there was supposed to be complete by summer s end but less than twenty percent of the system is done (and that s shaky at best (http://www.dslreports.com/shownews/88068)). MetroFi has now said that it needs a financial commitment from Portland to continue. Portland s current stance is that MetroFi should stick with its initial agreement and complete the network but there s no firm answer yet as to how the city will proceed.
