If your parent, step-parent, or spouse is a veteran with a VA disability rating (0% or higher) then you should look into the California College Fee Waiver (CFW) program. Students meeting the eligibility criteria may get their college fees waived while attending a California Community College, a University of California (UC) campus, or a California State University (CSU) campus including the California Maritime Academy. If you are a veteran with a VA rating, then you need to keep the waiver program in mind when it comes time for your child to attend college. There are at least three seperate plans in this program and each plan has its own specific qualification criteria.
California Association of County Veterans Service Officers; California College Fee Waiver (CFW)

Other states have similar educational benefits for disabled veterans and surviving families, so check with your local college or Veterans Service Officer for more information. Ask around and check multiple sources though because it is quite likely many advisors may not be aware of the program or fully knowledgeable of qualifying details.
Use the benefits your military service has earned you and your family.
