Hello,

I am a DEP recruit set to ship out June 2. My contract is for HM and I am looking at C-schools that will advance my endeavor towards my long term career goal. I have already graduated from NMSU with a degree in biology and did one year of grad school in the MPH program. I know that I want to be either a podiatrist or orthopedic surgeon, and was wondering if anyone has heard of the Navy enlisted podiatry specialties. I found an article on military.com that described this program: http://www.usmilitary.com/1986/navy-enlisted-podiatry-specialties/
I have not seen anything else in my own research about such program and see in the link the year 1986. Is this program now defunct or has it just been reclassed as something else? Any insight would be appreciated.

There are Officer Programs for the Navy that will pay for your Medical School. Seems like enlisting as a Corpsman would be taking the long route towards your goal of becoming a Podiatrist.

8404,

Thank you for the reply. I am aware of the officer programs available and was concurrently preparing my officer packet and working with the officer recruiter at the beginning. I took my mcat exam and am still waiting on the results, but many factors played into my decision to go enlisted.

It may seem like the long route, but considering that the soonest I could enroll in a medical program (contingent on being accepted of course) would be August '09, the few extra years I would take going enlisted first isn't very long. I work as a medical assistant now, but the pay and benefits are not very good. The thought of waiting until Aug '09, or even an additional year past that date to start, is not as appealing as starting now and gaining valuable experience.

I want to serve my country, and rather than arguing with people who disagree with what we are doing now in our foreign affairs, I want to actively apply my beliefs by participating in what our country is doing. In addition, my wife is ready to leave the desert, and the student loan repayment program that was approved for me will alleviate a lot of financial stress for us.

Having my degree I know that I can always move up to an officer position and/or become a doctor. Going enlisted is an experience that I only have the chance to do once. I really feel that it would make me a better officer in the end and I would appreciate the position more having worked my way up to it.

I know this is long, but I have thought very hard about and discussed with my wife the benefits and drawbacks of my decision, and truly feel I am doing the right thing.

So, the link you posted discusses the officer podiatry opportunities, but there are no enlisted positions. Do you think that the first article I found might be disinformation? Thank you again for your time and response.

J.B.

I can't speak on the first article! However, I applaud your willingness to answer the call. The same call I answered more than 35 years ago.

Sounds like you have researched everything and the only thing left for me to do is to take one step back and salute you and say, Welcome Aboard.

May you have nothing but Fair Winds and Following Seas

Respectfully;

Welcome aboard brother!
When you mention NMSU would that happen to be New Mexico State University?
I graduated from NMSU in '86, enlisted in '87 and retired last July.

As for a NEC for podiatry, it doesn't exist. You might be able to become an Ortho Tech and slide into Podiatry, or even a Surgical Tech.
Though I'm not sure if if the Ortho NEC still exists.
In my experience most folks that work in Podiatry are either, Quad Zeros (0000 No Nec) Ortho Techs, or Surg Techs.

The way Navy Medicine works is if the job can not be delpoyed, get rid of the NEC and hire a contractor.

(Rant on) Send all the folks with the delopyable NEC's on deployment so often they get out before reaching retirement and help eliminate the legacy debt. (Rant Off) :rmad:

Good Luck!

To better prepare you for our Navy.. I am giving you all the "GOUGE" on our Enlisted Codes for Navy Medical Enlisted..

You better get used to this.. After you read this.. then get back to us with questions.. I think you might want to go Surg Tech more then anything.. if you get the chance.. A recruiter CAN NOT I repeat CAN NOT guarantee you a C-School (ALthough they will call FMBT a C-SChool It's not). Get with us before you sign "ANYTHING". You don't get to pick a C-School shipmate, It gets to pick you. In other words there has to be a need. We don't offer you a condo or a driver either, even if the recruiter promised you one.
Read this all of it.. If I were you I would really think about Respiratroy or Surg if you are going The "DOCTOR" route..

DocLat,

You are indeed correct in that I meant New Mexico State. I graduated in 2005. Its cool to meet another alum on here! Thank you for the info. When looking at the NEC list, those were actually some that I thought sounded interesting, especially surgical tech. I saw in one of your other posts that you were guaranteed E-4 upon completion of A-school? That would have been great!

Da-Chief,

Thank you for the response and the NEC list. I am curious as to what "gouge" means as I am not familiar with this term. The recruiters did not promise me a C-school or anything extravagant. I did get a guaranteed slot at HM A-school, E-3, and the Student Loan Repayment Program. The SLRP took a while after I signed to get approved, but after filling out DD forms, attaching promisory notes, and filling out a Statement of Understanding, I was told by my RInC that everything was a go. I realize that things in the Navy are "needs based," but was under the impression that once in a sailor could request further schooling and NECs that were available. Maybe this is false and I was a little naive, but I would not be disappointed if I was just placed where ever they need me. I understand that everything that is assumed about the military must be taken with a grain of salt, and I am all right with that.

The only thing that I would have liked is the E-4 after A-school that DocLat received when he enlisted. This is only because I would like to be a good provider for my wife and a little extra pay would have been nice. However, this was not offered to me and I am still OK with it.

I know you mentioned asking here before signing anything, but I had already signed and sworn in before finding this site.

Thank you for the response,
J.B.

...but was under the impression that once in, a sailor could request further schooling and NECs that were available....

A Sailor "can" request additional schooling, such as a 'C' school. But that is generally 'after' you have done at least one tour of duty. The Sailor can submit a 'package' request for the school. Remember, there are no guarantees, and you are merely submitting a request, to go to this school. Your command, can deny or approve the request.
