I am a forced conversion from AT to HM, interested in Surg Tech school. Our last CCC told me I needed to wait until I have been a HM for a year before I apply to any schools, it has now been a year and I am looking into it. But I am being told by our new CCC that if I pick up 2nd I can't apply to Surg Tech. But many others have told me since I was forced over and already a 3rd that it can be wavied. Is any of this true???

Additional Information
If you like the idea of being part of an elite group that cares for patients, join us in the Operating Room as a Surgical Technologist (ST). Successful surgical procedures require a group effort. It involves a team of competent, caring, highly trained professionals; the ST is one of them. We train our students in the fundamental skills and knowledge of basic surgical anatomy, sterilization procedures, aseptic technique and instrument handling that will allow you to prepare and maintain the operating room for surgery and perform the duties of scrub and circulating technologist.

I'm in ST school now, I know the website says you have to be 8404 but that can be waived. We have a class of 39, and only 5 8404's. Now that I'm looking at it alot of the information from the site is outdated. The SRB level is at 3.5 right now, and sea/shore rotation is 5 shore/3 sea. The latex and betadine allergy is not a factor, and while the body fat is an issue, we have some people that reported out of standards. I'm assuming your active duty, so I'm not sure about HM2 disqualifying you, but I know we have 2 second class reservists. One piece of advice though, do not reenlist before coming to school. We have several people that won't be getting an SRB come graduation day because they reenlisted at thier last command. It's a fun school though and an even more fun job, I'm sure you will love it!
Excellent Krash;
Nothing like first hand information, from someone who's actually there.
Fantastic information.

Does anyone know what the process is to get thie waver and what the requirements might be to get the waiver might be? Please message me back asap if you have any information on the waiver. I will be going to meps as soon as I get the initial medical screen back and would like to have the information before I sit i with the detailer. I am going back into the reserves if that makes a difference for the waiver.
Thank you!
JRD:
Your referennce that you will be going to MEPs soon, leads me to believe that you are not currently active duty. One would normally work through their chain of command.
Although, some students graduating Corpsman 'A' school, who have demonstrated academic excellence, have been approached about open seats at Surgical Technician school.
I don't believe this is something you can negotiate upon enlistment.

Are there any other C schools you can go to or be offered besides Surgical Tech? What are they? Are there any links that I can look up?
These are two locatons that depict 'some' of the available 'C' schools. Some of which you won't be offered directly out of 'A' school.

Are people in the reserves eligible for C schools? I see they require 36 months or more of duty once completed. A reservist already has 6 years commited or does that not count?
We had two reservists, they were both HM2's.
Thank you for the information 8404. You are correct in that I am not currently active duty. I am a former FC in the process of enlisting into the reserves. I am considering both the surgical tech position and the HM0000 position. I am considering the ST training to help me better achieve my goal of becoming a DO with a residency in surgery. The DO schools look more favorably on those with such skills. The only issue is the time off work for both the FMF class and the ST school. That, and I'm old (38) and wondering if I could actually carry a 70-100lb sack and not fall over!
That leads me to another question...the first phase of the FMF class for the reserves is on the weekends; do we fly out on friday night and return sunday night or does the training require us to be there eariler on friday and not leave until monday sometime? Is the second phase then conducted on the 14 days of AT for the year?
Thank you once again for the information.

I know that the surg tech school gives you a two year degree equivalent certificate in the space of six months. FMTB should run somewhere between six and twelve weeks depending on if you have to wait in between schools.
