My name is Marek, and I ship out 20081001. I am interested in how the schooling works in the Navy. I understand that I will have 14 weeks of "A" school, but what happens after I graduate? When the Navy says they are going to pay for my college/schooling, what does that cover? Will there be additional schooling after I graduate "A" school, and if so does the Navy cover that? How can I ensure that the Navy will cover all of my education no matter what? When does a recruit find out when and where they will be based? That is all I really have for now. Any information would be helpful thanks.
Marek:
Welcome Aboard.
What happens after you graduate 'A' school?
Currently, there is a push to send all Corpsman to Field Medical Training Battalion, FMTB. See http://www.lejeune.usmc.mil/fmtb/index.shtml
Depending on the time of year, budgets etc, you may or may not receive orders there immediately following 'A' school graduation. If you do well at Corpsman 'A' school, you may also be offered a 'C' school.
'C' schools are specialty schools, such as Surgical Technician, Optometry Technician, etc. If you don't receive a 'C' school after 'A' school, you are eligible to request a 'C' school, after your first tour of duty in the fleet, providing you are qualified and meet the schools prerequisites.
All, Navy Active Duty and Reserve training is paid for. Additionally, while serving as a member of the military, you have "Tuition Assistance". Whereby you can attend college courses in a classroom setting or via online internet courses. You can read more about the Navy's Tuition Assistance program here: https://www.navycollege.navy.mil/ta1.html
Education after you leave military service:
Depending on what you negotiated on your enlistment contract, you will have the MG1B benefits. You could also receive an MG1B kicker, (extra money on top of regular MG1B benefits) and additional education bonuses. Read more here: http://www.military.com/recruiting/bonus-center/resources/navy-bonus-and-incentives-overview
Finally, spend some time at http://www.nstc.navy.mil/rtcgl/ to learn more about Recruit Training. Additionally, we have posted some information here http://www.corpsman.com/category/military-information/recruiting-information/ that will help you get promoted and give you a head start on required knowledge at Recruit Training Command.
As always, I invite others who may be able to offer additional assistance with answers regarding Tuition Assistance or Enlistment Bonuses.
Make sure whatever the recruiter has promised you is 'written' on your enlistment contract. If it's not written, it doesn't exist.
