I retired from the Navy in 1988. My last duty station being Cherry Point and was TAD to 2nd FSSG. I was surprised when they had an inspection (uniform) and informed me I needed to attend. When we formed ranks, HMCS Powers called me to the front. I was then told that I would review the troops. Boy did I jump at that. As I inspected the troops, everyone told me, "thanks." My heart skipped a couple of beats. HMCS Powers then informed me that I was being piped over the side. I turned and saw some of my fellow shipmates manning the brow. As a BM piped, I saluted and walked the brow. I had a tear in my eyes and knew at that moment that I was leaving my "family" and going out into a world that I was not sure of. I have remembered that day deeply in my heart as I have all the other days I lived while in the Navy. HMC Crone, I wish you the best on your coming days of retirement. Be ready for that first day as a civilian when you wake up and do not have to go to work (unless you find something to do). You have served your country with pride. Well done, shipmate. May you have blue skies, fair winds, and a following sea.
