I mentioned yesterday (http://www.corpsman.com/shownews/Interested-In-Pretending-You-Have-Influence-On-VerizonNYC-Deal-94591) that after months of closed door meetings, NYC's Franchise and Concession Review Committee (FCRC) is holding two public hearings before it all but rubber stamps a Verizon FiOS franchise agreement with the city. Dow Jones (http://money.cnn.com/news/newsfeeds/articles/djf500/200805201739DOWJONESDJONLINE000733_FORTUNE5.htm) has some detail on last night's meeting, at which a Verizon official again promised that "there will be no discrimination on the availability of the service or on the build-out."

As per the new franchise agreement, most users in Queens, the Bronx and Brooklyn won't see service until 2011. The penalties for Verizon wimping out on their build-out obligations aren't much of a deterrent down the line, so it will be interesting to see if Verizon keeps its promise. I found this particular paragraph entertaining:To be sure, New York, Verizon's home town, is a much bigger stage, and the rainy weather didn't keep the activists away - a small row of Verizon backers sat in the back holding up signs saying, "Keep Cable Honest" and "Competition Works." A Verizon spokesman said they weren't affiliated with the company.
Were they affiliated with any of the artificial consumer groups (http://www.consumers4choice.org/) funded by the company?
