I'm wondering if anyone know's if it is possible for me to go to a ship for my first command as a Corpsman. I'm going to be a fleet returnee in August and i'm trying to get to a specific ship upon completion of A school. And also, it's a Precom Unit (the Makin Island LHD 8). Would that make it any harder or is it impossible eitherway? Well, let me know if you know anything so that I can stop dreaming about getting back to a ship. Thanks. -QM3
You could probably go to a ship from A-school, but the likely-hood of you being able to pick which ship you go to is pretty slim. Reason why I say you might be able to get to a ship from A-school is that most people don't really request that as their first duty station. But it's all based on availability. You'll still go to FMTB, since that's pretty much a req. for docs, especially males.
Most students put Marines or overseas as their top two choices for sea duty, so if you have "ship" as yours, than you just may get it.
Then again, in this world we live in, if you know the "right people", you might be able to get whatever you want... ha.

I tagged the Jarrett (FFG -33) after FMTB and Surgical Tech c-school due to spousal co-location since my wife was at NH Pendleton because it was the only junior HM billet available in all of San Diego and Camp Pendleton at the time. I cross rated to QM to get promoted faster (3rd class) (CREO less than 70%: my second choice at MEPS) and wound up getting sent to Amphibs (USS Comstock). I cross rated back when the war started and picked up second class as an HM with 3rd tracks. You don't how things will go until you deal with detailers. Good luck.
