View Full Version : How do I become assigned to a ship?
In about 6 months, I will be enlisting to be a corpsman. I was just wondering how I can be on a ship and what I have to do in order for that to happen.

Here this might help,
Go out and collect "8" black beads, 4 Blue beads, 2 Muave Beads..
Put them in a "FOLGER's" 8 Oz Coffe CAN, with a Blue top..
Spin in a circle 7-8 times.. Throw said beads in the air and yell
AYYYY KARUAMBA!!!
Hey this was tongue in Cheek,
I can tell you that in 23 years of Active Duty, up for orders multiple times, I could never get a ship. 845 billets for ships out of the entire Navy for HM's..
:P Shipmate the odds of you getting a ship out of NHCS are slim to none, we send people to ships around 4-6 times a year as baby doc's.. The rest go green or to clinics and hospitals..
Wish I could help you out..

Once you are a corpsman, all you can do is ask you detailer. It will be a matter of luck and timing. If there are billets available at the time you are to complete your training then you may be able to get a ship.

If there are only that many billets, where does everyone else go, FMF? Or some other C school for hospital duty like radiology tech?
I'm sure someone elsecould break down the numbers for ya, BUT, there is a BUNCH of us out of here in the Sandbox. Bunch being the relative equivelant of a poop-load of us.The other option of course is those "radiology techs" in the hospitals whocome here too as augmentees.
Field X-ray out here is pretty neat. It's as basic asthe first aid tent at the state fair, some x-ray film, a scanner, and alaptop.
So, in general...the corpsmen are on the ground and in the sand these days. Our shipboard Corpsmen even got a chance to hit the ground for a couple of weeks.
It's a game of pure luck. Let your intentions known as you go along and see where the beads fall.

hey all,
For Radiology, you have to have "1" tour under your belt before they send you to school now. Don't leta recruiter tell you otherwise.

Chief,
By "1 tour" do you mean one trip to work in the sand (or other duty assignment) or one 5-year enlistment tour?
Does the same apply to Surgery Tech?
Thanks in advancefor the clarification.

Radiology 1 tour anywhere just to show leadership your competent. Hgih attrition rate for this NEC. You have to have "GREAT" math skills and it is a knuckles down school. If you need to beef up in other areas I would do it.
Surg tech, if there are openings and you have a 85% Avg at Corps School or better you have a shot. But there has to be a opening for the NEC.
