Headed to FMTB and then 1st Mar Div Detach 29 Palms. I was wondering what units deploy when to where? I know when my friends in 2nd Mar Div deploy but was just a lil curious.

Any help would be awesome..

I also heard Marines are pulling out of Iraq slowly and headed to Afghanistan. Is it in affect or when will it be in full affect.

Thanks for your help!

HA Smith;

...what units deploy when to where?...

Do you remember anything from boot camp (RTC) about Troop Movement and that information is NOT to be discussed openly! "Loose Lips Sinks Ships!

Suffice to say, Marine Corps deployments are usually 7 months in duration and all MarDiv units deploy.

Click here for the 29 Palms (http://www.29palms.usmc.mil/) website.

Following are the two locations for FMTB. On the FMTB East site, there is a link on the front page, left hand side titled, "Student Material". You can open and/or download this and read all about FMTB and what to expect, it's rules and regulations. There is also a photo gallery which depicts some of the training evolutions for FMTB. Very informative.

Remember at 29 Palms stay hydrated, it's very hot there in the summer time.

TIP: Every Saturday, there is a FREE matinée beginning at 11am at the base Sunset Theater (http://www.mccs29palms.com/MovieCalendar/html/schedule.html). All other days, the price of admission is $1.00. A great benefit, considering the price of a movie off base.

There are Special Events (http://www.mccs29palms.com/Pages/SPECIALEVENTS.htm) happening on the base throughout the year. Duty at 29 Palms is all about what you make of it. Enjoy your time there.

Hey checking on my son when he deploys---any words of advice? Question communications--will he have to do anything special for his laptop or cell---or I assume he will be able to call or hook up to internet? Yes?no just want to make sure he plans well for when this happens and cancels his cell phone service or hibernates it. I assume this is all par for the course and he will figure it out on his own.

when my son was on his deployment - no cell phone allowed. When he deployed he was given a letter from his command that we used with his cellular company to suspend his contract while he was gone.

Depending on where your son is will determine internet accessibility. My son was one of the fortunate ones with internet right in their quarters.

When he deploys contact me and I will get him on the Adopt-A-Doc list
You will have LOTS of support as you prepare for his deployment and while he is gone - the members here will make sure of it.
If you need anything let me know

If your cellular provider is Sprint, make doubly sure you have everything documented and save any receipts they give you, once you suspend his service contract! Make photo copies of the receipts, as the ink fades over time, rendering them unreadable. In addition to the letter, DeeDee speaks about, the representative(s) may/may not want to see a set of orders for verification.

I also worked for Sprint for a short stint, and they were known to have fouled up many people's billing, while they were deployed.

CELL PHONE- Supposed to be a NO GO in CENTCOM AOR )Iraq/Afghanastan, etc...

Laptop- Like others have said internet might or might not be available, we dont have it in our rooms where I am at, but others on base do esp. Army (sigh).... It is probably not a bad idea for him to bring it though, although if it is top of the line, and or brand new I would reccomend getting a cheaper one for out here. Some places have share drives that will allow him to download all kinds of programs, or videos, or music...etc...so it could fill his evening time. Also it is a great way to bring out his study material for advancement, and other medical resources.

Keep it in a good case, and wrapped up. I keep mine in a bag wrapped up in an airline blanket (compliments of the trip out here) and wrapped in a plastic bag, yet it still manages to get dust and sand in it. I have heard a Pelician case is nice if it can be afforded.

One more thing to remember, Size and weight limitations. Tell him ot stick with the directions he is given, It sucks to be able to carry your laptop on when you leave the states, only to find out you have to throw it on a palett, with a bunch of other gear at some unnammed location, espically if it isn't protected in a case:panda:
