Can I bring pictures to RTC?
Yes, but keep them kinda small since you dont have much room. Also, make sure you bring a phone card or cash to buy one with. You'll need it for the phone call you get when you arrive.

Hmmm.... Except for your ID, I would bring certified copies and *not* the original documents, but I don't know if all this paperwork is really needed for most recruits.
I know the "official" website says bring it all to RTC, but most of this stuff should have already been checked off by the Recruiter or MEPS long before boot so I do not understand the logic.
Drivers license, birth cert, SSN, HS diploma, degree, etc... it was all done before I even went in for my enlistment physical. Then during the physical they pretty much ignored my civ shot record and later at RTC *all* the recruits were processed through the barber, supply, and shot lines like cattle through the slaughterhouse (only individuals with shot allergies got a pass).
Of course, way back in the day, the Navy was still cutting paper paychecks so I did not do the direct deposit thing until years later...

Almost instantly upon arrival at RTC San Diego, we were *required* to make a call home (at our own exspense) to notify a family member that we arrived safely at our destination.
If I remember correctly, as soon as the wheels stopped rolling, my group of fresh meat was "greated" by the CC as he checked our names off the manifest and provided our initial "guidance". Among that set of "instructions", we were directed to file immediately into the phone line as soon his talk was over and the vehicle door opened. Then the group was given additional "motivation" and "encouragement" to perform the task promptly and properly as we stepped out of the van.

Yeah i think i may have put the phone up to my ear and maybe dialed a few numbers before i was "Motivated" to carry on to the next task. Man that first night is long.

I recently found the letter the Navy mailed to my parents after I arrived at RTC. No phone call.
Do the buses always arrive at 0300?
i don't even remember making a call home when i arrived at basic training for the Air Force. And Yes, they did have phones back then - I'm not THAT old :)

Pfft, no phone call for me (not that I remember anyway). My mom still has the letter they mailed. I did, however, get delayed to join a drum and bugle company. Volunteered one day to pick up cig butts at the PX and as part of that work party, we got to use the phones after we were done. That's when I learned (never again volunteer yourself was just a saying). There were some benefits of volunteering.
