I noticed on wikipedia and other websites that the Navy is getting new uniforms to replace the working whites and blues. When will that take place and what do you guys think about them? I think that the light blue shirt/pant one looks like a bus drivers uniform. I like the uniforms the way they look now.

Seeing that I am not yet in uniform, my opinion is moot. What do you guys think?

I'm used to uniform changes, during my time in service early eighties, we had a CNO that thought we needed double breasted coats and milkman caps. His name was Adm. Zumwalt and that idea didn't last long. And this idea is similiar to the one uniform idea that the Canadians now have.:nah:

I don't mind the changes to the dress blues and whites, they actually make a lot of sense. Side zipper and extra piping. The working uniform changes are atrocious. I was one of the unfortunates in the 70's who got the junky black pants, black ball cap and blue jumper work uniforms, then lost my dress blues for the doorman suit jacket. Ugliest uniforms I ever saw until today. I had always dreamed of wearing bell bottom blue jeans and blue chambray shirts with my dixie cap. That was my image of a sailor. That's still my image of a sailor.

I liked the dress blues, 13 buttons and all. Even bought a set of gabardines on Oki to come back home in. Trop whites with short sleeve shirts were ok.

Loved the dungaree bell bottoms and chambray shirt.

Favorite uniform was Marine tropical worsted with short sleeve shirt for office, dispensary, etc. Jungles were a great uniform, but I was in before they were worn anywhere but in country.

To be honest Alexandru, I don't remember ever seeing light blue in any of the uniforms except for the cami's. On the other hand the change is supposed to take place sometime in October after the fiscal year. Hope that answers your question. My opinion doesn't matter because i'm still gonna wear it anyway, lol. Have a good one! - Jaxcorpsman

Coming from the Army, I hated the idea of working whites, working blues, dungrees, and all that stuff. WAYYYYYYYYYY too many uniforms to worry about. I like the fact that there will only one working uniform, and we are going to utilitie style uniforms. As for me, I don't have to worry about it UNLESS I go back to the blue side :( I think even the CBs are going to the new utlities, but not sure...

Could it be that Admiral Zumwalt's policies were still in place during the early eighties? hmm Food for thought!

Z grams as they were called also allowed Naval personnel to wear their hair to the collar and beards. So it became an interesting mix if you were FMF. You could wear Navy grooming standards in Navy uniform, but if you put on Marine uniforms including utes, you had to wear Marine reg grooming standards. There were a lot of dungarees worn. They tried to find ways to get you into a Marine uniform. I did a short float out of Oki and the Lt in charge of Marines I was with didn't care what I wore, so I wore dungarees and actually stayed in the sickbay quite a bit. Better than the 5 high racks we were stuffed in.

...5 high racks we were stuffed in...

I remember those! What a joy and you couldn't sit up, if you were in the rack. You had to roll out sideways to exit the rack. It was heck, if the guy above you had indigestion or excess gas......... ah the joys of shipboard life.

I have a PPT that shows most of the new uniforms, and timelines for their arrivile to different areas. I believe it was sent out by Director Navy Uniform Program. I'm sure most of you have seen it, but it would probably be usefull in this discussion to have it on the site, or at least pictures of the new uniforms, to include the new PT Gear. That might invoke a few more discussions. If I knew where to upload it I would. Although, my internet is limited during the day here in Iraq....At least I have access to this site:)

Ah hahaha! Sounds like the USS Ogden! I used to punch the farting bastard above me in the back of the head after about the third month. I was so happy to see coffin racks when I went on my second float USS Tripoli. As much as I like to complain about them. I would never trade my time on those grey ladies.

Ha 1/4 must live by the stick with what you know mantra! The old Oggie Dog was on deployment with us in 94 as well. actually got to go spend some time on her again on that float. It's good to know that we probably drank some of the same Jp5

Not only were we on the same ship, but I was also attached to 1/4 Battalion Landing Team (Rein) but back in 1974!

Yea, great times were had by all. oorah Doc.

I was also on the USS New Orleans LPH-11 in 1974.

I don't recall ever seeing any 'straps' to hold the person in during rough seas. But my memory isn't what it used to be either. Of course this was for the Marine berthing compartment. I didn't know much about the Sailors compartments, as we weren't allowed inside.

Well, Ive read the threads and seen the proposed switch. I dont know how I feel about it, at least as far as my op is concerned..lol

I think I'll def miss having a caduseus on my shoulder in my working uniform. I can appreciate the changes, as the navy tries to move us towards a multi-branch type of uniform but I just don't think they make us look unique enough.

From a recruiting standpoint, our working uniforms for better or worse, made us stand out as "not the Army or Marine Corps".

Change is inevitable so of course we will be standing by. I get the impression that my CoC doesn't really want us to change. That op has not been stated in so many words but that is the general atmosphere.
