Cable companies are starting to scale back (http://www.boston.com/business/technology/articles/2008/06/14/rcn_dropping_analog_channels/) the number of analog channels that they offer in favor of turning to an all-digital service in the near future. RCN Corp. and Verizon Wireless plan to be all-digital within a year. Comcast has been slightly behind in this area but recently announced (http://www.engadgethd.com/2008/06/19/comcast-plans-to-go-all-digital-in-20-of-its-markets-by-years/) plans to be all-digital in one fifth of its markets before 2009 begins. This move allows for more HD programming to be introduced so its generally something customers support but it may require some consumers to get additional hardware to keep their cable operating properly. In compliance with the FCC regulations regarding the analog-to-digital switch, Comcast and others will still need to be giving out digital adapters to analog customers but customers that have digital TV tuners in one set and use a coaxial cable to get channels on another set in the house may need additional hardware as this transition takes place.
