Citywide wireless network provider MetroFi announced (http://www.dslreports.com/shownews/95194) earlier this month that it couldn t afford to continue operating the networks that it had deployed in Portland and other cities in the United States. There was some hope that a buyer would come forth for the Portland network prior to the June 20th deadline issued by MetroFi for network shuttering. That date has come and gone and there was no buyer (http://www.informationweek.com/news/mobility/muni/showArticle.jhtml?articleID=208800014) to be found. Portland officials say that the shutoff is disappointing but it s not surprising since the city itself had no interest in purchasing the network from MetroFi. It s unclear at this point how Portland will proceed in this area, if at all. Other cities throughout California and Illinois are also shut down since MetroFi found no buyers there either.
